 Get
yourselves into three groups. Each
group will investigate one of the acts
and carry out a minimum 5 minute
presentation to the rest of the group.
The presentation must include:
 What the act is
 Why it came into force
 What it would mean to you in your role
as customer support provider
 Everyone
(individuals and organisations)
holding personal information about
individuals must inform the Office of the
Information Commissioner that they are in
possession of such data and register with the
Office (paying a fee to do so).
 There
are 8 principles that must be adhered
to making sure that data is safe. If an
organisation breaks the law could face upto
£500,000 fine.
 Fairly
and lawfully processed
 Processed for limited purposes
 Adequate, relevant and not excessive
 Accurate and up to date
 Not kept for longer than is necessary
 Processed in line with your rights
 Secure
 Not transferred to other countries without
adequate protection
 This
was introduced primarily to attempt to
stop the instances of computer hacking.
 Hacking is the intentional accessing of
computer systems to illegally gain access to
data (for the purposes of theft) or with other
malicious (and sometimes quite serious)
intent.
 Up
to 10 years in prison and or unlimited
fine.
 Responsibility
of victim to prove crime.
Terrorism
 This
Act 2000 .
does have implications for computing
and ICT in that it is now an offence to use
computers to intimidate individuals and
groups, particularly from a political
perspective, or hack or block any websites
for political reasons.
 Government extended period of detention
without charge to 28 days.
 The
sending of unsolicited direct marketing
by phone, fax, email, text or any other
electronic means is strictly regulated.
 You
have the right to object to electronic
marketing messages and can register with a
statutory preference service if you don’t
wish to receive sales calls or junk faxes
 The
owner of the copyright has the exclusive
right to copy the work. That means it is
illegal to copy software without the
copyright owner’s permission.
 Copyright
infringement can result in a civil
and criminal case resulting in unlimited fines
and up to 10 years in prison.
