Louisiana Purchase





The US buys the Louisiana Territory from
France for only $15 million (about 3 cents per
acre!)
This DOUBLES the size of the US!
Jefferson appointed Meriwether Lewis to lead
an expedition
Lewis chose William Clark as second in
command
A Native American woman, Sacajawea,
served as interpreter and guide
Embargo Act

America will, in 1807, begin to face
problems with the British



(seizing US vessels, blockades, etc.)
Jefferson declared an embargo (ban on
exporting to foreign nations) to help
keep America out of the conflict
*Ends up hurting the USA more than
helping!
