Gives youth real-world information about the cost of
housing
Advantages of
graduated
rent
Motivates youth to increase income while in program
and likely exit with a higher income
Creates saving account for youth at end of the program
to be used for security deposit or something else
Places an emphasis that transition into independent
living will occur soon
Challenges of
graduated
rent approach
Need to remember exactly where each youth is on the
rent schedule
Need to carefully account for youth’s money so that all
rent “above” what they receive in their stipend is saved
on their behalf
Need to increase income of youth
