Timeline for SPA
• Seattle University established 1891
• Buckley Amendment signed into law 1974
• Seattle University goes live with Colleague
1998
• Seattle University tires of angry emails and
phones circa 2006
• Parents Link launched 2008
• Student Provided Access launched 2014
Problems for Parents Link
to solve
• Angry phone calls to Student Financial
Services (SFS) and Registrar offices
• “I pay the bills, let me see it!”
• Students had to come into the SFS and/or
Registrar office and fill out a form.
• Faculty & Staff outside of the SFS and Reg did
not know if student granted access to a 3rd
party.
Solutions provided by
Parents Link
• Easy way for students to grant access to
parents or other 3rd party to academic and/or
financial information
• Easy way for faculty and staff to know that the
student has granted this access and whom to.
• Separate location for parent login.
• Reduced angry phones to SFS and Reg… for
awhile.
Parents Link
Parents Link Operations
• Email with login information is sent to user
right after access is granted by the student.
• First login requires user to setup new
username & password.
Parents Link Operations
• Student can provide access to only view academic or
billing information or both to 3rd party.
• Access to speak with SFS or Reg office personnel only
granted through separate “Records Authorization”
process
New Problems created by
Parents Link
• SFS & registrar staff not able to view information as
displayed in Parents Link
• Password management process troublesome for parents
and students
• Two separate links: one to approve view access and the
other to allow discussion of academic and/or billing
information
• Student still have to fill out a form to provide access to
parents link
• Frustrating phone calls from parents
Parents Link redesign goals
• Combined Records Access & Parents Link into
one location: SUOnline (WebAdvisor)
– Still two separate actions, however both in the
same place.
• Create New password management process
• Eliminate need for records access form
• Allow parents, students, and staff to see the
same information.
