Baseline Review
Each Year the 10000 students and 2000 staff at Bangor University:
Use nearly 40,000,000 gallons of tap water
Produce 160,000 tonnes of sewage
Produce 1,000 tonnes of rubbish……
…….but recycle 300 tonnes
Have an energy bill of over £2.5 million, and water bill of £500,000
Use 200,000 litres of heating oil
Produce over 13 thousand tonnes of Carbon Dioxide
Drive over a million miles on business trips, and
Use 20 million sheets of printer / photocopy paper
Targets set
Reduce energy consumption by 3% each year
Reduce CO2 emissions by 3% a year (and 15% by 2012)
Reduce water consumption by 2% each year
Recycle 40% of our waste this year
Prevention of Pollution
Develop a Green Travel Plan
Achieve “Fair Trade University” status
Recycling of Textiles / Cardboard / Food Waste
How we’re doing
Energy consumption is going down
Carbon emissions are going down
Water consumption – big increase in 2008 but now going down
We are recycling more now than at any other time (30%)
Our buildings are being designed to be more energy efficient (e.g. ECW)
We drove half a million fewer miles last year, than the previous year
Staff and Student Travel Survey (> 1300 responses)
Trialling food waste collection from September
Binless Office trial in Estates
Phased introduction of recycling bins across the Estate
