Dear friends,
2017 marks the 100th anniversary of the incorporation of the Greek Community of Winnipeg.
Over the past one hundred years, our Community has been deeply committed to promoting and
preserving our Greek culture, faith, and heritage in Manitoba.
As part of our celebration of this milestone in the history of our community, we invite you to
extend your best wishes for the future through an advertisement in the Centennial Celebration
Commemorative Album. This album is not restricted to businesses; messages can be from your
family, your volunteer organization, or in honour of a loved one. Photos can also be included
with your advertisement. This Album will be given to families and guests in attendance at the
Centennial Celebration Gala on March 25, 2017, and will be made available in the Church Office
after the Gala.
Please find attached a Commemorative Album advertising form for you to complete and return to
the Church Office. Please note that payment must be received to confirm space in the Album by
January 27, 2017.
Thank you for taking the time to consider supporting our community through this Album. We look
forward to receiving your advertisement, and to celebrating with you at the Gala event in March!
If you would like more information about our Centennial Celebration Commemorative Album,
or would like to discuss other sponsorship opportunities, please contact Centennial Celebration
Committee by email at [email protected].
Thank you,
Agapi Katrakis

Continued support of our Community is essential to its ongoing success.
If you already have not done so, please renew your Church membership and consider
an Automatic recurring monthly donation by contacting the office at 204-889-8723.

received:

$
15 per week from each family - Less than a dinner for 1 person at a restaurant.
$
65 per month from each family - Less than the average cable & internet bill.
$
784 per year from each family - Less than a family gym membership.
Your donations and support are vital to keep our community open and operating.

Church Etiquette
When attending Divine Services we all have the responsibility of maintaining proper decorum
and atmosphere in the church. The very first thing to keep in mind is that we are to be at Divine
Services on time.
The church is the House of God. Reverence and good manners are required at all times. No
irreverent or irrelevant conversations should go on in the Narthex or in the church proper. There
are certain times during the Divine Services when no one should be moving about, or entering the
church, or being seated at a pew. Wherever a person happens to be at these moments, he or she
should stop and stand reverently until the proper moment to be seated. These times are:
1. During the Doxology, while the priest is censing.
2. During the Small Entrance - The procession of the priest and altar boys with the Holy
Gospel.
3. When the priest censes the Altar, icons, and congregation throughout the Divine Liturgy.
4. During the reading of the Epistle and Gospel.
5. During the sermon.
6. During the Great Entrance - the procession of the priest and altar boys with the Holy Gifts.
7. During the recitation of the Creed and Lord’s Prayer (Our Father).
8. During the Consecration of the Holy Gifts. (Se Imnoumen)
9. During Holy Communion. To receive Holy Communion the faithful should come forth from
the side aisles and exit via the centre aisle to return to their pew.
10. When receiving any sacrament of the church, use your baptismal/chrismation name.
11. During any special services such as Memorials or blessing of the loaves, special
doxologies, etc.
The general rule is that whenever the priest is outside the Holy Altar either with the censer or for
giving a blessing, there should be no movement in the church. Also, we remind everyone that we
should attend the Divine Liturgy and all services of divine worship from the beginning.
Please remember that Parish Council members are obligated to maintain order and decorum in
the church during worship. Please try to understand us. Cooperate with us. Τhe priests are here
to serve you. Your cooperation in following these regulations will help us greatly in offering you
assistance in all your spiritual needs.

Thoughts from our Parish Priest
Beloved Orthodox Christians,
We are constantly attacked by temptation, especially when we are on the right path of God. Though we face temptation
daily, we have the great protection of God — greater than the gates of hell, which cannot prevail against the Church.
The key is to ask for God’s protection, so we can navigate through temptation and the attacks of the devil. We often find
ourselves attacked at our most vulnerable, especially when we cut ourselves off from the Church (and therefore Christ). It
is extremely important for a Christian to remain close to the Church, because it is in the Church that we receive the Holy
Body and Blood of Christ and receive the spiritual nourishment, strength, and forgiveness of sins to continue on the path
of God. The devil attacks Jesus in the wilderness, after His baptism, because He is left alone. Christ did not need to fast in
order to fight temptation, because God cannot be corrupted by evil. We are given, therefore, His example that He passes
on to us as an instruction on how to defeat temptation through the power of fasting, humility, and moderation.
The devil tempts Christ as He is fasting. But it is Christ’s dignity that is attacked: If He is the Son of God, then why not
use His authority and power to feed Himself? Why let Himself go hungry when He is the ruler of all? We are attacked
in the same way when we are tempted to think only of our physical nourishment and forget the spiritual food of the
Holy Spirit. We are made to believe that our dignity as persons relies on our comfort and easy life, but it is not. Christ
becomes an example of virtue to us, as He lets himself go hungry in order to deny the devil and not submit to temptation.
Christ teaches us to never obey the devil in anything. Later on, Christ will tell His disciples that this kind of demons “can
only come out through prayer and fasting.” If we wish to fight temptation and follow the Way of God, we must strengthen
our spirit and will through fasting and prayer. Our dignity as persons and children of God is found in our rejection of the
devil and our faithfulness to Christ, which brings about integrity and honesty.
Christ does not use His power as God to overcome the devil, or even His hunger and the wilderness. Though He can
command angels to serve Him, He uses the Scriptures to rebuke the devil: “You shall not tempt the Lord your God.”
We do not overcome the devil by miracles, but by forbearance and long-suffering, which come about from our study of
Scripture and regular prayer. We do not expect personal glory, but salvation by Christ, since our glorification happens in
the person of Christ. In waiting for a miracle that will fix all the wrongs in our lives, how long can we hold out until we
despair and give up? It is in our patience that we find our strength. Christ teaches us patience and He helps us in our
patience and suffering.
Demons are fed by our sins and rejoice when we fall away from God. We sin because we are not perfect. But we
always have the Son of God Who raises us from our sin and despair and restores us in our spiritual warfare through our
repentance. In tempting Christ, the devil tells Him to throw Himself off the mountain. Christ does not show us His power
by casting Himself down, but by saving others. God’s wish is to raise up even those of us who are fallen, not to let us fall.
He reaches out to us constantly. All we need to do is accept Him and follow Him.
We are called as Christians to deny ourselves, take up our crosses, and follow Christ. We deny ourselves and find our
dignity as persons, not in our comfort, but our integrity and convictions. We are strengthened in those convictions by
fasting and prayer, which lead us to repentance of our sins and forgiveness of our enemies. We defeat the devil, not by
fighting him one-on-one, but by running to Christ for refuge and using the examples He gave us.

Thoughts from our Parish Priest

Church Iconography Program
Beloved in Christ,
In this bulletin you will find the program of our iconography, as well as a sample of what the remaining icons
will look like. The top layer of the icons is the New Testament icons, which will be put up on the right side of the
church (as you face the Altar). The bottom layer is the Old Testament icons, which will be put up on the left
side of the church. The theme is Promise and Fulfilment, and it depicts the promises given by God in the Old
Testament, and the parallel, or fulfilment of each promise in the New Testament. These icons will be installed
on the top halves of the side walls of our church.
We are also installing icons of individual saints along the lower halves of the side walls of the church. There is
no program for these icons, meaning that each donor can choose the Saint to be depicted (as long as it hasn’t
been donated already). I can give you some suggestions if you’d like.
Finally, we are changing the small icons on the iconostasis (temblon) of our Altar, as the current ones have
been aged and darkened. For a list of those icons, please contact me directly.
The price for a scriptural scene (upper half of the walls) panel is $9,500.
The price for an individual saint (lower half of the walls) is $2,500.
The price of the icons on the iconostasis is $2,500.
You can also make a general donation toward the iconography of the church, as many people have done
already. Another option is donating an icon as a group.
If you have any questions, please feel to contact me.
In Christ,
Fr. Kosta Tsiolas

Sunday School
Programs for Kids & Adults: Ages 3-18 years (Kindergarten to Grade 12)
When: Sundays, after Holy Communion 11:45-12:30 p.m. in the Manitoba Hellenic
Cultural Centre classrooms.
Welcome back! Sunday School resumes on January 8, immediately following Holy Communion.
NOTE FOR PARENTS OF PRESCHOOL-KINDERGARTEN STUDENTS: Please send your child
to Sunday School on January 8 with some photo from his or her baptism. Photos will be used as
part of the January bulletin board, and will not be in pristine condition when returned, so if you can
scan the photo and provide us with a scanned and printed copy, this will be better. Please write on
the back of the scanned copy the date of the child's baptism, and the first names of their Nouna and
Nouno. Thank you!
NOTE FOR PARENTS OF GRADE 4-6 STUDENTS: While we understand that this has been a
busy time of year, we ask that you be as diligent as health and weather conditions allow in sending
your children to class. Three times this year this class has either needed to be cancelled entirely, or
the one student who has been there has needed to be sent to another class, losing the lesson he or
she would have had.
We are making every possible effort to structure lessons that are as dynamic as possible, but we
cannot do that if we know that this age group will be missing. Your child's absence affects the
education of every other child in that class, and it is unfair to children who do come, because they
will not have a lesson that builds on the things they have previously learned, and expands on
age-appropriate concepts, but instead they will be placed either lower or far above their grade, in
the middle of a lesson that they have not had the beginnings of, and that handles concepts quite
foreign to them. In other words, they are lost. Please do the best you can to ensure the attendance
of your child, because their attendance affects the education of all in their class.
LIBRARY NEWS: Our parish children's book library has picked up over thirty new titles! These titles include three
chapter books donated by author Karen Papandrew. Check them out!

MOBILE ORTHODOX CHILDREN’S BOOK LIBRARY
Our parish is the first in Canada to introduce an Orthodox children’s book library to bring
beautiful but expensive (and in some cases hard-to-find) children’s books to our children.
Through the generous donations of both parishioners and non-parishioners alike, we have
procured a library cart with over 100 books from board books to “chapter books” for our
middle school readers. Some fiction, some fact, all Orthodox!
We have been very blessed to have several authors donate copies of their books to our
parish library, stretching our donor dollars further and notable publishers have offered us
deep discounts as well.
We are continuing our quest for new Orthodox books for our library, and welcome all
donations and suggestions of books we might include. Please see Victoria Marckx if you
would like to donate to our library fundraiser.
BUY BEAUTIFUL ORTHODOX BOOKS FOR YOUR CHILDREN
…or grandchildren, nieces, nephews, godchildren, and anyone else who loves to read.
This month we will be sending home order forms with all children. Parents can purchase
the Orthodox books featured for their children simply by returning the order form with a
cheque made payable to St. Demetrios. The books will be ordered and brought to the
Church for distribution. The proceeds will go to the Children’s book library fund. Books
make wonderful gifts for Christmas, name days, birthdays, or any other occasion. Books
should arrive during the first week of Advent, in order to be a perfect complement to the
Advent Fast.

HELLENIC GALA
Philanthropy & Scholarships
“Αιεν αριστεύειν” – “Strive for excellence in everything you do”
Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada
Saturday, 30 September 2017; Delta Hotel
In 2017 we celebrate 150 years for Canada and
the Centennial of the Greek Community in Manitoba!
The objectives for this new event, in the form of a charity gala, are to:
a) help "mainstream" the Hellenic Community's contributions in our society;
b) produce a larger philanthropic impact than we currently make;
c) generate higher revenue for charitable causes and AHEPA scholarships; and
d) serve as the new venue for awarding AHEPA scholarships.
Winnipeg AHEPA and Winnipeg Harvest, the chosen philanthropic cause for 2017, are
partnering for the inaugural Hellenic Gala which aims to:
a) advance philanthropic causes in Winnipeg and Manitoba
b) award AHEPA scholarships (scholarships have been awarded since 1990)
c) entice your taste buds with authentic Greek food, to be enjoyed along with dancing
and entertainment.
Winnipeg Harvest - Fighting Hunger and Feeding Hope - is a non-profit, community based
organization that is a food distribution & training centre. Their goals are to a) collect and share
surplus food with people who are hungry; b) offer training and learning opportunities to help people
step up and out of poverty; and c) focus attention on hunger within our community and move
towards long-term solutions. Their ultimate goal is to eliminate the need for food banks in our
community and they welcome volunteer efforts.
There are several levels of sponsorship for the inaugural “Hellenic Gala”. Sponsorship
recognition extends beyond our Greek Community.

AHEPA Mourns Passing of
American Hero, Philhellene
Brother John Glenn, Jr.
WASHINGTON, DC (December 8, 2016) -- The members of
the American Hellenic Educational Progressive Association
(Order of AHEPA), the leading association for the nation's
millions of American citizens of Greek heritage and
Philhellenes, are deeply saddened to learn of the passing
of American Hero, and Brother Ahepan, John Glenn, Jr.,
announced Supreme President Andrew C. Zachariades. "Brother Glenn was a true American Hero and Philhellene,"
Zachariades said. "Brother Glenn exemplified a lifetime of extraordinary service to America as a heroic combat
pilot, a trailblazing astronaut, and upstanding public servant in the United States Senate for four terms. We are
proud and honored to call him our Brother. May his memory be eternal."
Then-Senator John Glenn received the 1993 AHEPA Pericles Award for excellence in public service by thenSupreme President John Economou, Akron, Ohio, at the 31st AHEPA Biennial Congressional Banquet in
Washington, DC.
In acceptance, Glenn saluted AHEPA for its philanthropic work and said receiving the award was an honor he
would never forget. He also spoke about the importance of Greece and shared the concerns of Greek Americans
on Cyprus and the FYROM name-recognition issues.
"Greece is one of only a handful of countries that has fought with the United States in every international conflict
we fought in this century," Glenn told the audience. "Today, Greece stands alone as the only Balkan nation that
is a democratic ally, and I say we owe it to Greece and to ourselves to do everything we can to contain and end
the nightmare of violence which continues to engulf that part of the world."
On Cyprus, Sen. Glenn said in his acceptance, "For as long as I am in the Senate, I will continue to stand with
you in seeking the removal of Turkish troops from Cyprus and for a just, lasting and negotiated settlement in the
country."
On FYROM, he added the United States must ensure "the legitimate concerns of Greece are fully addressed
-- and it means actively discouraging any kind of provocative behavior on the part of Skopje, such as placement
of the Star of Vergina on that country's flag."
Brother Glenn was a member of AHEPA Stanton Chapter 92, Steubenville, Ohio. Reprinted from the AHEPA Headquarters News Release dated December 8, 2016.
