Introduction & Background
• COACHE Survey of CUNY Faculty conducted in 2015.
• Baruch Senate appointed Ad Hoc COACHE Analysis Committee
to analyze & report COACHE findings to Faculty Senate in Fall 2015.
• Committee did not have access to raw data for its analyses.
• Report reflects our reading of materials made available, including:
• Report compiled by COACHE, at Harvard, made available to faculty by Provost in fall 2015
• Compares overall performance of Baruch to peer institutions (selected by Provost
from limited list provided by COACHE), and to all other institutions
• Compares subgroups at our campus to subgroups at other institutions,
• Describes differences among certain subgroups within Baruch.
• Data not broken down by schools or departments within Baruch.
• Only additional material made available to Ad Hoc Committee:
• Table comparing Baruch faculty ratings of 26 benchmarks with combined mean
ratings by the 4 other CUNY Senior Colleges (Hunter, Brooklyn, City, Queens,Lehman).

• Goal: of COACHE survey
• to pinpoint problem areas– in policy, practice, demographics.
• Context:
• COACHE survey conducted when faculty had no contract & salaries not gone up in 6
years. This cannot account for differences between Baruch & other CUNY senior
colleges, but may account for some differences between CUNY & other institutions.
• Our report
• Includes comparison of Baruch faculty ratings of benchmarks with ratings of other
CUNY senior colleges combined -- not included in COACHE report.
• We also include charts comparing Baruch with “all other institutions” more clearly.
• Comparisons with “peer” institutions NOT included, because we believed these
institutions were not similar to Baruch and comparisons were not useful.
• Ratings are for aggregates of items, plus one individual item: satisfaction with
salary, given its relevance to context and its perceived importance to Baruch faculty.
• Also includes comparisons of faculty groups within Baruch showing most & least
satisfaction, list of best & worst aspects of working at Baruch

2015 COACHE Survey of Baruch Faculty
Summary: Comparisons and Conclusions
• Baruch compared with other CUNY senior colleges and with all other institutions
 Major concerns/weaknesses:
Negative comparisons with other CUNY senior colleges and with all other institutions
• Senior Leadership
• Baruch’s ratings consistently lower than ratings at other institutions, both inside CUNY & outside.
• Areas scoring in bottom 20%, for both President & Chief Academic Officer are Pace of Decision Making,
Stated Priorities, and Communication of Priorities.
• While negative ratings of Baruch Senior Leadership may reflect negative views of CUNY Senior Leadership,
fact that Baruch’s ratings are lower than at other CUNY Senior Colleges indicates problem at Baruch.
• Governance
• Baruch ranks in bottom half of all institutions on most dimensions of Governance. Baruch ranks in bottom
10% in “Institute regularly reviews effectiveness of governance” & in bottom 20% in 10 other dimensions.
• Compared to other CUNY colleges, Baruch faculty ratings are lower in Governance Adaptability &
Governance Productivity.
• Tenure Clarity
• Baruch ratings lower than those at other CUNY Senior colleges and at all other institutions.
• Tenure Clarity ratings produced most negative comparison to combined ratings of other CUNY colleges.
• Appreciation and recognition
• Appreciation and Recognition of faculty is an area of weakness compared both to other CUNY colleges and to all
other institutions.
• Faculty Leadership
• Baruch’s ratings lower than at other CUNY colleges in Faculty Leadership.
• Salary
• Rating of single item, not aggregate of other items. Included because of relevance to CUNY colleges in context of
6 years without contract or raises.
• Baruch faculty’s rating of Salary is lower than aggregate ratings, compared to ratings at all other institutions.
• Personal and family policies, Teaching, Health and retirement benefits
• Baruch’s ratings are also lower than those at all other institutions in Personal and Family Policies, Teaching and
Health and Retirement Benefits (which includes salary)
 Major strengths: Positive comparisons with other CUNY senior colleges and with all other institutions
 Divisional Leadership
• Divisional Leadership compares favorably with other CUNY senior colleges and with all other institutions, where its
percentile ranking is above 70%.
• Compared to all other institutions, ratings for the Deans are mostly above the 50th percentile, with particular
strength in Communication of Priorities, Pace of Decision Making, and Stated Priorities, the same areas which
showed weakness for the President/Chancellor and the Chief Academic Officer.
 Departmental Leadership
• Departmental Leadership is in the top half of all other institutions, but is not above mean for other CUNY senior
colleges.
• Ratings for Heads/Chairs strong in Fairness in Evaluating Work, Pace of Decision Making, Support in Adapting to
Change.
 Departmental Quality, Service
• Departmental Quality & Service are areas of strength compared to other CUNY senior colleges & to all other
institutions
 Facilities and Work Resources, Interdisciplinary Work, Collaboration
• Facilities and Work Resources, Interdisciplinary Work and Collaboration are areas of strength compared to other
CUNY senior colleges only.
Comparisons within Baruch itself:
Ratings of benchmarks by different categories of faculty compared to overall faculty ratings:
• Highest: Pre-Tenure faculty. Gave 15 highest ratings.
• Lowest: Associate Professors. Gave 10 lowest ratings.
• 2nd Lowest: Faculty of Color. Gave 7 lowest ratings.
3 Best Aspects of Working at Baruch
• Geographic location (46%mentions)
• Quality of colleagues (25% mentions)
• Academic freedom (17% mentions)
3 Worst Aspects of Working at Baruch
• Compensation (42% mentions)
• Teaching Load (31% mentions)
• Cost of living (20% mentions)
 The relative satisfaction of Pre-Tenure Faculty & dissatisfaction of Associate Professors and the
highlighting of “compensation” as the “worst aspect” of working at Baruch again point to the
contract and salary issues. The lack of a contract and of any faculty raises for six years,
could be expected to be more of a factor for those who have been at Baruch for 6+ years.
 We do not have comparison data for these items with other CUNY colleges.
