LUSI Scope
There are six level 2 WBS elements in WBS 1.0
WBS 1.1 – Project Management
WBS 1.2 – X-ray Pump Probe (XPP)
WBS 1.3 – Coherent X-ray Imaging (CXI)
WBS 1.4 – X-ray Correlation Spectroscopy (XCS)
WBS 1.5 – Diagnostics and Common Optics
Includes XPP, CXI and XCS diagnostics and optics

XPP Scope
Diffractometer & Wide Angle Detector Mover for orienting samples and moving
the 2D detector
2D X-ray Detector for collecting x-ray scatter at 120 Hz
Shared Laser System including multipass amplifier and pump, optics for beam
transport, diagnostics and safety system.
Beam diagnostics, x-ray optics, controls and data acquisition
Components removed from XPP CD-1 scope
X-ray Emission Spectrometer & Small Angle Detector (See responses to the last
FAC)
All sample environments – strictly budgetary - Would like FAC guidance on what is
a good initial suite of sample environments such as a modified “orange” cryostat
Ti:Sapphire Oscillator & Regen (Share with AMO)
Scope changes are reversible if funding becomes available at a later date

XPP Science Capability Changes
since CD-1
Reduced Scientific Capability since CD-1
Emission Spectroscopy
Small Angle Scattering
Limited to Room Temperature and Room Pressure Experiments
Eliminating Beam Splitting/Sharing
Decreases Beam Time
Sharing AMO Laser
Only allows setting up one experiment at a time
Reversible scope changes preserving early science
capabilities

CXI Major Scope Items
0.1 to 1 Micron Focus KB Mirrors: KB pairs taking the full direct beam
used to produce a 0.1 micron and a 1 micron focus at the interaction
plane.
Room Temperature Sample Vacuum Chamber to accommodate
multiple types of samples and experimental geometries.
Particle Injector - with a differentially pumped nozzle - to produce a
focused beam of submicron particles delivered from an aerosol at
atmospheric pressure to the high vacuum of the chamber.
X-ray Detector to measure the diffraction pattern from the sample
which will have a central hole to let the direct beam pass. The detector
will be read out after every LCLS pulse, at 120 Hz.

CXI Science Capability Changes
since CD-1
Instrument Functionality compared to CD-1
Limited to small samples, no focus larger then 1 micron
Limited information on the explosion dynamics with no electron
TOF
No ability to shorten the pulse duration to limit radiation damage
Loss of capability to transfer unique biological samples to vacuum
without cryo system
Addition of reference laser
Allows off-shift alignment
Increases useable beam time
Reversible scope changes preserving early science
capabilities
