An Overview…
• Routine monitoring of instrument performance, celestial sources and
particle background on orbit
– Event classification, monitoring and optimization of instrument
performance; monitoring, detection
• characterization of transient sources (including GRBs)
– with support from LAT Science groups
• generation of instrument response functions for high-level analyses
• Provide science data products to GSSC, alerts to GCN and event data
to LAT Collaboration
• Coordinate shift activities for on-orbit monitoring (instrument and
science)
• Coordinate investigation of anomalies, calibrations and propose
changes in configuration to optimize scientific return
– in coordination with the LAT Science Groups

There is more…
• Data Analysis for Ground tests (IA Workshops) and moving toward
data Analysis for on-orbit operations
• Data analysis to support monitoring of trigger and data flow
conditions
– work together with FSW folks when performing data analysis on
trigger, on-board filters, etc
– work with CHS when correlating science data and housekeeping
data
• Monitor Instrument data processing , configure and operate pipeline
• Provide input to SAS to develop tools, database, web development
and software for science operations
– test and provide feedback
• Integrate with the LAT Collaboration
– not only SLAC people, rely on support from the LAT collaboration

Instrument Analysis Workshops
Exercise reconstruction algorithms and data analysis
tools
– Use simulated and real data
Uncover and quantify instrumental effects
– Could potentially affect science data
Create a core and trained group
–
to participate in the analysis of the beam
test data
– to lay foundations of the LAT Science

Data Analysis: GLAST/LAT Beam Test @ CERN
•
Science performance verification strategy
– LAT performance phase space is huge
– MC simulation used to verify requirements by analysis
– Beam test used to tune and check the simulation and aspects of
the reconstruction.
» Essential component of our overall strategy
» Previous beam tests 1997, 1999/2000
•
Objectives
– Characterize performance at high energies
– corrections for leakage, inter-tower gaps, and backsplash (SSD in
TKR and ACD).
– trigger performance (e.g., CAL-HI), comes “free” with same data
– Verify MC simulations of detector’s response
• electromagnetic showers (gamma, electron)
• Point Spread Function and Energy reconstruction methods.
• Compare distributions of quantities related to those used in
background rejection with hadron beams.
Primary purpose is to constrain systematic
uncertainties in science analysis

Service Challenge in 2007
We will have Data Challenge 3 in 2007… but it will be a service challenge
Data Analysis with simulated sky data to test ISOC tools and software
•
Data Challenge Series
– Test the data analysis system
• HEP software and Astro FTOOLS
– “Blind “ Analysis
• Details of physics and detector performance
not revealed to the collaboration until
closeout
– Engage the collaboration
• to start thinking science
