Introduction
Students in the Introduction to Education

collaborated with local businesses to collect funds.
The funds were used to purchase new reading
textbooks for Mrs. Hitt’s first grade class, Elmdale
Elementary School, Springdale, AR.
This project engaged the community in
meeting the needs of an area school.
Project Overview
Mrs. Hitt’s first grade class, Elmdale
Elementary School, needed reading
textbooks specifically formatted for the
diverse developmental reading levels of it’s
students. The leveled reader program offers
books for all levels of readers.
This project’s focus was on facilitating
in raising the needed funds to purchase the
leveled reading textbooks.
Project Objectives
• Raise funds to defray the cost of leveled textbooks
• Engage students in the voting process by having them “elect”
their favorite book to purchase as a contribution to their school
library.
•
Increase community awareness of children’s literacy.
Which book to buy?
Mrs. Hitt reads “The True Story of the Three Little Pigs”
to her First grade class. The class voted to purchase their
favorite book as a contribution to the school library.
