Unit 4 Functions
• Here are some example of functions:
– Apologizing , greeting, inviting, refusing,
agreeing, thanking…
– I’m sorry for…
– How are you?
– Are you free tonight? I’d like to invite you to
dinner.
– I’m not available tonight.
– I can’t agree with you more.
– I appreciate your help.
• Same sentences can mean different
meaning in different context. ( “ I am
tired.”)
• Level of formality: formal, informal ,
neutral
• It is important to use the level of
formality that suits a situation, which
is call appropriacy. (be
appropriate or inappropriate)
