Data mining is inconsistent with the Fourth
Amendment
Data mining is a threat
to civil liberties
The government collects data from sources
without verifying its authenticity
Data warehouses contain missing or
incomplete records, multiple fields entered
in one field, and incompatible programming
languages
Data doesn't include information on multiple
transmissions (from multiple sources) so they
could be mistaken as multiple events and
create a false pattern
There is currently no completely accurate way
to profile a terrorist
◦ There is not enough data about terrorists to put
together a good profile
It is possible that the algorithms and
processes of data mining can be avoided by
terrorists
Mission Creep: When data is used for
purposes that are different than the one for
which the data was originally collected
Mission creep can be a consequence of the
desire to use all data, even when unnecessary
◦ Used in this way, data can produce unintended or
misleading results
