Aluminum Electrolytic Characteristics
C
Aluminum Electrolytic Capacitors belong to the family of ELECTROLYTIC
capacitors. They have the following characteristics:
• They are Polarized with anode (+) and cathode (-) terminals
• They dominate the upper range of capacitance values
• They are very widely used as they offer lowest cost per capacitance value
• They are available in both leaded and surface mount styles
• The are fixed capacitance value (their value is not user variable)

Z ()
Z = Impedance (Ohm) Impedance is the total AC resistance (ohm)
the capacitor presents to the circuit.
The impedance includes the capacitive and inductive reactance (Xc and XL)
and the ESR. The impedance value will be dependent upon the capacitance
value, the frequency and the capacitor construction.

Start with high purity aluminum foil
Both anode (+) and cathode (-) foils are chemically etched
to increase the surface area (more surface area = more capacitance)
An aluminum oxide dielectric is electrochemically formed
on the anode (+) foil surface

Conditioning
Reforming -Aging All parts ( 100% ) are conditioned for 30 ~ 60
minutes at rated temperature and voltage
•Repairs imperfections
caused during assembly
•Stabilizes characteristics
•Screens out defective
units
PRODUCT TRAINING: Aluminum Electrolytic Capacitors
The higher the temperature rating
the longer the life expectancy
Types
 +85°C - Industry standard general-purpose components
(-40° ~+85°C temperature range). 20+Series
 +105°C - Industry standard wide temperature components
(-55° ~+105°C temperature range). 20+Series
 +125°C - Special extended temperature range (-55°
~+125°C) 2 Series: NACT and NRWX
 Low Impedance / Low ESR - special type offers low
impedance - ESR at high frequency (50KHz ~500KHz)
6 Series: NACZ, NRSZ, NRSX, NRSY, NRE-SX and NSRZ
 Low Leakage - special type offers reduced leakage
current characteristic. Low cost replacements for tantalum capacitors.
5 Series: NACL, NLE, NLE-L, NLE-LW and NLE-S
PRODUCT TRAINING: Aluminum Electrolytic Capacitors
 Specialty Polymer - Solid Aluminum - new technology
products use polymers (plastic) as a replacement for the
liquid electrolyte. Benefits include no dry-out (infinite life),
very low impedance /ESR and high ripple current rating.
Trade off is high cost. 1 Series: NSP
 Bi-Polar - special ”Bi-polar" or ”Non-polarized" component
can be produced by using a second anode foil in place of
the cathode. This results in a non-polarized part that can
be reverse biased. Trade off is: only half the capacitance
value, higher loss (increased dissipation factor), lower ripple
current rating and higher cost as compared to a standard
uni-polarized part. 5 Series: NACEN, NNR, NNA, NRESN and NSRN

• Most popular part style (with the most aggressive
pricing) continues to be miniature +85°C rated
general-purpose style radial leaded style parts.
( NIC NRSA, NRSS series )
• Axial* and snap-in leaded styles both continue
to grow at modest rates.
* - Recently UCC and Panasonic discontinued axial leaded
style parts. We have been successful in converting axial
leaded style customers over to NIC.
PRODUCT TRAINING: Aluminum Electrolytic Capacitors

• Largest growth has been for surface mount cylindrical can
style parts.
• Lower pricing, higher available capacitance values voltage ratings and better safety factor, than tantalum style
parts, have fueled growth

PRODUCT TRAINING: Aluminum Electrolytic Capacitors
Applications
Aluminum electrolytic capacitors are used in virtually every
segment of the electronics industry. Any product that "plugs into
the wall" (receives it's power from the utility company) uses
aluminum electrolytic capacitors in the power supply circuitry
which converts AC voltage from the utility company into clean
continuous DC voltage to power the circuitry.
POWER SUPPLY
Aluminum electrolytic capacitors are also widely used to provide
temporary voltage hold-up (they act as short-term energy sources)
during transition periods (high load, line droops, transient events)
within most electrical circuits.
PRODUCT TRAINING: Aluminum Electrolytic Capacitors
Applications
Typical markets/end-products using aluminum electrolytic capacitors include:
Power supplies (linear and switch mode), Point of Load (POL) Voltage
regulators and Converters (DC-DC, AC-DC), Line voltage conditioning (UPS
systems, PF correction) and inverters (DC-AC).
Computers and Peripherals (mother boards, monitors, disc / hard drives,
modems, soundcards, graphic/video cards, printers, scanners…etc.)
Telecommunications / Networking equipment (phones, switchers,
adapters, routers, hubs, LANs, Ethernet hardware, wireless communication… etc.)
Audio/Video equipment (CATV, recorders/cameras, signal processors,
amplifiers, projectors… etc.)
Appliances (power and control systems)
Security and Alarm (sensors, cameras, display and control)
Automotive (electronic control and display systems)
Medical (electro-surgery, dialogistic, monitoring)
Industrial Controls / Data Acquisition
Office and business equipment (point of sale, scanners, copiers, printers,
fax machines…etc.)

Benefits
Aluminum Electrolytic Capacitors
Characteristics of aluminum electrolytic capacitors that sway
customers:
 Lowest cost… this is winning feature
 Higher CV... than offered by other competing technologies
 Safety… Aluminum electrolytic capacitors handle unforeseen
transients without complaint, far better than competing technologies. “Soft”
open circuit failure mode is preferred to short circuit failure mode of
competing technologies.
 Mature product with proven technology… It works
PRODUCT TRAINING: Aluminum Electrolytic Capacitors
Trade-offs
Aluminum Electrolytic Capacitors
Characteristics of aluminum electrolytic capacitors that most
customers accept or work around:
 Life expectancy... is limited as liquid electrolyte dries out over time and
temperature. Fortunately, this typically occurs long after the end product or
assembly has reached it’s useful lifetime.
 Reflow soldering only… surface mount style aluminum electrolytic
capacitors can not be used in wave-flow soldering. Fortunately most SMT
assemblies produced today are soldered using reflow soldering.
 Component height... aluminum electrolytic capacitors tend to stand
higher, as compared to competing technologies. For ultra-small applications
these style capacitors are sometimes too physically large (i.e.... pocket
phones, pagers, etc.)
PRODUCT TRAINING: Aluminum Electrolytic Capacitors
Competing Technologies
Competing - Alternate technologies
Tantalum Electrolytic:
+ Solid electrolyte (long life)
+ Lower profile (height) for height restrictive uses
+ Long term reliability is better
+ Low ESR - high ripple styles available
– More expensive than aluminum
– Limited to low voltages…
(4.7uFmax @ 50VDC, 15uFmax @ 35VDC, 22uFmax @ 25VDC, etc)
– Shorting failure mode… Smoke - flames - fire hazard...
limited tolerance to transient events.
PRODUCT TRAINING: Aluminum Electrolytic Capacitors
Competing Technologies
Competing - Alternate technologies
Ceramics:
+ Low ESR - High Ripple Rating
+ Long term reliability is better
– More expensive for >1uF
– Very unstable at >1uF(capacitance value decreases dramatically
with applied voltage and temperature)
– Limited to low voltage <25VDC for >1uF
– Shorting failure mode
