What is Health and
Wellness?
LT: I can describe health. I can define
wellness and show how it is an important
aspect of my life.
Think-Pair-Share
1. How do you define health?
2. Turn to your neighbor & discuss
how you define ‘health’.
What is Health?
• Health is defined as a combination of physical,
mental/emotional, and social well-being.
• Everyday you make decisions that impact your health.
• These three traits relate and create your total health.
• The health triangle reflects the three sides of health, and can
be used to ensure a balanced and healthy lifestyle.
Social
Physical
Emotional/Mental
Quote on Health
•“Health is a state of
complete physical, mental
and social wellbeing, and
not merely the absence of
disease.”
-WHO on Health
Physical Health
• Your physical health is exactly how it sounds – how healthy is
your body? How healthy is your heart? Physical health
includes hygiene, exercise, and nutrition.
• You can improve your physical health in a variety of ways.
• What are a few ways we can improve our physical health?
Mental/Emotional Health
• Mental and emotional health involves how you handle your
feelings, thoughts, and the situations you face each day.
• Are you behaviors, thoughts, and emotions positive? How do they
effect others?
• Do you find positive solutions to problems?
• Do you like your self?
• Are you able to handle challenges that come your way?
Social Health
• Social health includes how well you get along with friends,
classmates, elders, and teachers.
• It also includes communication with, respecting, and valuing
other people.
• Good social health can be assessed or judged by your ability
to keep and make friends.
• How well do you get along with the individuals in your own life?
• Do you spend quality time with your friends and family?
What is Your Health Made of?

Health & Life Span
• Health can often be analyzed on human life span, or how long
the average person lives in year.

• Causes of death THEN (1900):
1) Pneumonia
2) Tuberculosis
3) Influenza
• Causes of death NOW (2000’s):
1) Heart Disease
2) Cancer
3) Stroke
4) Chronic Lower Respiratory Diseases
5) Unintentional Injury
6) Diabetes
* What is this telling us about life style changes?
Causes of Death for TEENS
• For young adults in the United States (15-19), causes of death
are:
•
•
•
•
•
Unintentional Injury (#1 type?)
Homicide
Suicide
Cancer
Heart Disease
Turn to a neighbor and discuss:
• What risks do teens take with their health?
• What are some examples of how decisions could lead to
poor health or death?
• What can you control that effects your health, and what is
out of your control?
Achieving a Balanced Lifestyle
• Like a triangle, the three sides of health are all connected;
when one side changes, the other two are affected. Your
health effects your over all well-being, as well as your life span
and potentially your eventual cause of death.
• Being health means balancing the three sides of your
triangle.
• When your health is in balance, you are more likely to have a
high level of wellness, and a high level of quality of life: the
degree of overall satisfaction that a person gets from life.
• Vocab: Wellness is an indication of your current health habits
and behaviors.
Wellness
• Your health and wellness are constantly changing. Your health
at any moment can be seen along a continuum. As you
mature, your position on the continuum often changes.
5 Extra Years Video
• 5 Extra Years
In Your Journals Reflect…
• What would you do with 5 extra
years? How are you going to ensure
you get those 5 extra years?
• Now, how do you define health? How
does this definition differ from your
definition at the beginning of class?
