INTRODUCTION TO WELLNESS
DIMENSIONS OF WELLNESS
There are 4 dimensions of Wellness. When we say that someone is “health”
we are often talking about their Physical Being. However, to be truly well you
must be healthy in other areas.
The 4 dimensions of Wellness are:
1. Physical
2. Psychological
3. Social
4. Spiritual
These four dimensions are interconnected and are constantly interacting with
each other. BALANCE is something that we will talk about throughout the
semester and for a person to be well they must balance out each of the areas.
PHYSICAL
• Functional operation of the body
1. Physical Activity and Fitness
• Appropriate activity and fitness
• Cardiovascular endurance, muscular endurance, flexibility and body
composition
2. Medical Self Care
• Regular check ups
• Proper use of medicine
• Taking care of yourself when you are sick

3. Physical Environment
• Safety in home
• Safety related to motorized vehicles
• Safety related to acts of violence
• Pollution
• Abuse of alcohol, drugs and tobacco
PSYCHOLOGICAL
3 Categories
1.

Mental
Reacting to adversity
Viewing difficulties as challenges
Adopting a positive attitude
Making the best of bad situation
2. Emotional
- Coping with emotions and personal feelings
- Laughing and making other laugh
- Being able to express emotions apprpriately

3. Intellectual
• Using information effectively and learning continuously acquiring
knowledge at all times
• Thinking creatively and critically
• Being curious
SOCIAL
The social has to do with others, both human and non human. Our social
dimension includes our relationships with other people but is also includes our
relationships that we have with the earth and the animals. Therefore we are
constantly socially interacting throughout the day. There are 3 different
environments that we interact in:
1. Cultural
2. Natural

Cultural – interactions between family, friends and the community we live
in. The ability to understand others’ values and ideals.
Natural – weather and climate (sunny, cold, cloudy etc). It also deals with
the geography (lakes, forest, mountains etc). We must also look at
pollution.
Built – buildings, streets, vehicles, machines and roads make up the built
environment. The built environment is anything that has been made by
humans to serve their needs.
SPIRITUAL
This is the depth of one’s life. It refers to the values and beliefs that one has.
It does not just happen and is something that often takes times and attention.
Some things that the spiritual dimension may include are:
• A belief in some unifying force that gives purpose or meaning to one’s life
• An understanding that true happiness does not come with material goods
• A desire to contribute to society
• A sense of wonder and awe related to the beauty, power and mysteries of
nature
