Examine the Assignment
• Use your notes to write an essay comparing
and contrasting the authors’ ideas about
honesty and deception. In your essay,
examine how each author uses irony or
paradox to express these ideas.
Framing Your Essay
Introduction
Include background about the topic and each
story.
Include a very strong thesis statement.
First Paragraph
Irony and paradox are literary devices that
authors often use to make a point about a
topic they are exploring.[Insert background
information here.] Both “Like the Sun” and
“The Open Window” contain irony and
paradox that are used by the authors to
comment on truth or lies.
Second Paragraph
Explain the irony and/or paradox in the first
story using appropriate quotations. Make
sure you connect the irony and/or paradox to
the author’s ideas about truth or lies.
Third Paragraph
Now, do the same for the second story.
Conclusion (Fourth Paragraph)
Rephrase your thesis statement and summarize
your main points. End with a strong
statement about truth and lies.
