• There will always be a need to write reports, whether
in business or academia
– 2 documentation styles for research papers
• MLA (Modern Language Association of
America) standard in humanities
• APA (American Psychological Association)
standard in social sciences

One-inch margins all around
Indent first word of each paragraph ½ inch from left margin
Page number placed at right margin ½ inch from top margin
Precede page number by your last name on each page
Instead of title page:
– Place name and course info in a block at left margin starting
1 inch from top of page
– Center title one double-space below your name and course info

MLA Documentation Style
• Uses in-text parenthetical citations
– References are placed in parentheses with Author’s last
name and page number(s) of referenced information
– DO NOT note references at the bottom of the page
– Notation at the page bottom is used only for explanatory
notes that elaborate on points discussed in the paper (use
superscripts for the note reference mark)
• Cite your sources
– Parenthetical citations
– Works cited

• “Works Cited” title is centered 1-inch from
top margin on separate page
• The works cited are listed as follows:
– Alphabetically by author last name (or if
author is not available, by title of work)
– Italicize or underline title of work
– 1st line of citation is entered at left margin
while subsequent lines of same entry are
indented ½ inch from left margin

Starting and Customizing Word

Click the Start button on the Windows taskbar
Point to All Programs on the Start menu
Point to Microsoft Office on the All Programs submenu
Click Microsoft Office Word 2003 on the Microsoft Office submenu
If the Word window is not maximized, double-click its title bar to
maximize it
• If the Language bar appears, right-click it and then click Close the
Language bar on the shortcut menu
• If the Getting Started task pane is displayed in the Word window,
click its Close button

Starting and Customizing Word
• If the Standard and Formatting toolbar buttons are displayed on one
row
– Click the Toolbar Options button
– Click Show Buttons on Two Rows in the Toolbar Options list
• If necessary, Click View on the menu bar and then Click Normal
• If your zoom percent is not 100, click View on the menu bar, click
Zoom on the View menu, click 100%, and then click the OK button

We have just re-formatted the footnote text with a new style.
The font size was changed to 12, the line spacing was set to
