Gifted and Talented Education

What is Gifted and Talented
Education?





A student’s giftedness creates specific learning
needs. The purpose of identification is to find those
students who require educational modifications to
meet those needs.
Screening takes place for all third grade students in
the spring.
Identification is based on multiple criteria, including
standardized and non-standardized instruments.
Students are placed in a GATE cluster.
Students are provided opportunities for differentiated
instruction within the context of the classroom.
What is Differentiation?
Modifications can be made in any of the
following areas:
 Content-Curriculum Compacting
 Process-Higher Level Thinking Strategies
 Product-Tiered Assignments
What opportunities for differentiation are
available at San Elijo Elementary?

GATE Certified Instruction-The teachers who
have GATE clusters in their classrooms receive
professional development training in
differentiated instruction and are certified to
teach GATE students.
 Curriculum- Students are pre-assessed in the
various content areas and allowed to work at an
accelerated pace or supplemented with deeper
content or level of questioning.
 Enrichment Materials/Programs (In class)
 Outside programs specifically targeted for gifted
learners

Leveled literature books designed to utilize
higher level reasoning skills in small group
discussions
 Individualized Math contracts
 Access to computer programs for
accelerated learning (ex: ALEKS)
 Classroom specific research-based

Educational program fostering creative thinking through open ended
problem solving

Program features
•
Critical Thinking Competition
• Long Term Problems - Each year 5 questions are posted. Students
pick 1 question to work on for 4 months and work in teams of up to
7 students. Categories range from building mechanical devices to
presenting their own interpretation of literary classics.
• Spontaneous Problems – think on their feet – 10 minutes to solve
• Extensive Resources Available
• Established, intellectually challenging curriculum activities
• NASA curriculum activities
• Access to past spontaneous questions to do as activities

Competition – Saturday, March 2, 2013 Palm Springs

Long term problem presentation & spontaneous problem solving

Time – students to meet 2 times per month after school with coach
to brain storm and work on solutions
•
Volunteer Opportunities

Team Coaches to guide students on long term problems,

5 hr training provided by Odyssey –

October 13th in Ontario
Judges- One per team is required – Training February 9th in Murrieta
• Spontaneous Coaches – lead 30 minute activities that are pre created
• Team shopper – purchase supplies for team’s design (reimbursable)

9AM-2PM Training is FREE! You must let me know if you are
attending this session. Training is mandatory.
Junior Achievement
Junior Achievement educates and inspires young people to value free
enterprise and understand business and economics to improve the
quality of their lives.
 Established enrichment curriculum available - “In Class Programs”
(This is a name given by Junior Achievement. Volunteers needed.)

4th Grade (Our Region®)
Our Region explains the economic/business resources found in state
and regional economies. Students discover the natural, human, and
capital resources in their home states and in regions of the United
States.
 5th Grade (Our Nation®)
Our Nation introduces the concept of a global economy and the
importance of choosing the right career. Volunteers lead students into
activities that explore the various types of businesses and jobs that use
STEM skills.
