The mission of the
Howard County
Gifted and Talented Education
Program
is to
recognize and develop talent in
advanced-level students.
The G/T Education
Program goals are to:

Participants Identification
 Students are identified for participation through testing.
Students are nominated for testing by teachers and/or
parents.
 Testing takes place in January/February.
 Notification of eligibility is mailed from the G/T Office
around Spring Break.
 Parents of students who do not meet the cut-off score
may request in writing a Placement Review at which
time additional data such as classroom performance
will be considered.
Enrichment
Participants
 We are working with highly able students
as they participate in the Gifted and
Talented Education Program.
 The program is designed to provide
services for students who demonstrate
above average ability, task commitment
and creativity.
Curriculum Extension Units
 Interdisciplinary advanced-level content, reading,
writing, & thinking skills
 3 CEUs per grade (2nd-5th) per year lasting
approximately 9-12 weeks
 2 CEUs for 1st grade
 Each unit requires two hours of instruction per week
with the G/T Resource Teacher
 Grouping is flexible to meet student needs (Previous
participation does not guarantee participation in
future units.)
 Multiple criteria are used for the selection process.

 Highest level of differentiation for

 Requires one - two hours of
instruction per week with the G/T
Resource Teacher
 Students self-select based on their
passion for a particular topic. Teacher
recommendation is required
Differentiation
 Differentiation to meet the needs of students
in the classroom.
 This may include:
 Guest lessons
 Gathering resources
 Providing mentors
 Developing lessons with classroom teachers to use with
specific students needing enrichment
 We will work with teachers to ensure
appropriate challenges for all children in the
classroom.

the needs of the gifted child

 6 academies offered this year from Sept through

 Held from 7:00 - 8:30 pm at varying High Schools in
Columbia
 First Academy for this year is October 10, 2012
