eerste levensjaar gewoond heeft, is maar matig tot geheel ongeïnteresseerd in het land, maar ik
des te meer. Vanaf jongs af aan was ik geinteresseerd in Azie, en in het bijzonder in Indonesie.
Hoeveel het nog met mijn familie te maken heeft, dat weet ik niet, maar ik begon met een
cursus Bahasa Indonesia op 14 of 15 jarige leeftijd. Hier kwam een tijdje Koreaanse les
tussendoor, waardoor veel Indonesisch wegzakte. Naast mijn Koreaans ben ik nu weer
Indonesisch gaan leren. Inmiddels heb ik ook Indonesische vrienden gemaakt en een
Indonesische vriend gevonden. Niet zo gek dus dat dit boek mij wel interesseerde toen ik het
tegenkwam (wederom in mijn zusje's boekenkast).
Hella S. Haasse staat bekend als een van de beste schrijvers van boeken met een 'NederlandsIndie'-thema. Ik zou mij moeten schamen dat dit het eerste werk is dat ik van haar gelezen heb,
al sporen titels als 'beste schrijver' mij vaak vrij weinig aan tot lezen. Ik ga in het vervolg dus
zeker meer lezen van Hella S. Haasse!
Dan nu iets over het boek zelf! :) Het verhaal is zo mooi geschreven... Ik vind Nederlands als
roman-taal vaak droog en taai (ik lees meestal, en liever, Engels), maar dit boek gaf mij totaal
die indruk niet. De personages en de omgeving zijn zo levendig neergezet, net of ik een film
heb gekeken in plaats van een boek gelezen. (Dat het boek slechts 2 dagen kostte om uit te
lezen zal ook meespelen). Ik wil over het verhaal niet teveel spoileren, maar het deed mij
denken aan een thema dat in onze huidige maatschappij nog steeds heel actueel is. De
aanwezigheid van immigranten in Nederland en hoe hun kinderen de dupe worden van
identiteitsproblemen. Nederlandse kinderen geboren in Indie waren niet welkom in het land
waar ze geboren zijn. Zo lopen soms immigranten kinderen die in Nederland geboren zijn rond
met het idee niet welkom te zijn. De status van Nederlanders in Indie en immigranten in
Nederland is uiteraard niet te vergelijken maar de hulpeloosheid waarmee de kinderen in een
situatie geboren worden is zeker overeenstemmend. Dit verhaal laat goed voelen hoe het is om
in zo'n situatie te staan. Aan de andere kant schrijft Hella S. Haasse niet met een verbitterde,
maar juist zeer frisse kijk op het leven van zo'n individu.

sebelumnya saya sudah menonton film-nya dan seingat saya, film itu cukup memuaskan.
Membaca Oeroeg seperti mendengarkan seorang kakek tua yang sedang bercerita mengenai
masa mudanya, ditemani oleh secangkir teh. Kakek itu bercerita dengan sangat tenang. Terlalu
tenang malah, sehingga mungkin terkadang kita sebagai pendengar menguap karenanya.

Awalnya kebosanan menghinggapi moodku menyelesaikan bacaan kali ini sampai akhirnya tiba
pada saat si 'aku' bertekad besar ingin kembali ke hindia tanah kelahirannya..
