als dit. Op de oppervlakte gaat het over een jongensvriendschap tussen de zoon van de
administrateur van een theeplantage en de zoon van een van de inheemse families die daar
werken. Door omstandigheden haast als broers samen opgroeiend, samen lerend, samen
ontdekkend, de Europese ik-figuur realiseert zich niet dat de samenleving het onmogelijk maakt
om zo door te gaan. Achteraf gezien beseft hij dat zijn Indische vriend, Oeroeg, tussen twee
culturen opgroeidde en wel bewust was van de onderhuidse problemen die dat bracht; in
Nederlands-Indië (de huidige Indonesië) van die tijd leefden kinderen van Indisch-Europese
ouders of gewesterniseerde Indische kinderen tussen twee werelden, niet geheel geaccepteerd
door de een of de andere. Vanwege dit spanningsveld was het haast onmogelijk dat de
vriendschap stand zou kunnen houden, en inderdaad werden de jongens steeds verder uit
elkaar gedreven.
Net als het eind van het boek, was de politieke situatie in Nederlands-Indië in deze tijd onzeker,
met een strijdende onafhankelijksheidbeweging. De veranderende verhouding tussen de
hoofdpersonen van het boek spiegelt de veranderingen in het land. Zodoende is het boek meer
dan alleen een verhaal over twee jongens, het is symbolisch en heeft meer diepgang dan men
in het begin vermoedt.
Het leest makkelijk weg, en ik ga zeker meer van Hella S. Haasse lezen. Dit boek staat op de
1001 lijst, waarschijnlijk omdat er een Engelse vertaling van is, want ik verwacht niet dat dit het
beste boek van deze auteur is. De Engelse vertaling heet Forever a Stranger and Other Stories,
wat de hoofdthema van het boek beter weergeeft.
Over discriminatie:
'Een panter is anders dan een aap,' zei Gerard, na een pauze, maar is een van de twee minder
dan de ander? Dat vind je een idiote vraag, en je hebt gelijk. Blijf dat nou net zo idioot vinden,
als het mensen betreft. Anders zijn - dat is gewoon. Iedereen is anders dan een ander. Ik ben
ook anders dan jij. Maar minder of meer zijn door de kleur van je gezicht of door wat je vader is
- dat is nonsens. Oeroeg is immers je vriend? Als hij zo is dat hij je vriend kan zijn - hoe kan hij
dan ooit minder zijn dan jij, of een ander?'
Over heimwee naar het land van je geboorte:
een diepgeworteld gevoel van zaamhorigheid met het land waarin ik geboren en opgegroeid
was. De jaren die ik in Holland had doorgebracht, hoe belangrijk ook, telden voor mij minder
dan mijn jeugd en schooltijd ginds.
Als het waar is dat er voor ieder mens een landschap van de ziel bestaat, een bepaalde sfeer,
een omgeving, die responsieve trillingen oproept in de verste schuilhoeken van zijn wezen, dan
was - en is - mijn landschap het beeld van berghellingen in de Preanger. Dit is zeker waar voor
de auteur, maar ook voor veel expats voor een ander land, en als expat spreekt dat me aan.

Persahabatan dua anak kecil (tokoh 'aku' dan Oeroeg) yang berasal dari dua suku yang
berbeda. Bukan hanya suku yang beda, tapi juga dari dua negara berbeda: yang satu penjajah,
yang satu lagi pribumi yg dijajah. Awalnya semua berjalan wajar saja, namanya juga kan anakanak ya? Anak-anak adalah makhluk paling terbuka yang bisa menerima perbedaan tanpa
banyak tanya. Beda kulit, cuek. Beda bahasa, cuek. Beda warna rambut, cuek. Yang penting
bisa main bareng.
Tapi begitu beranjak dewasa, Oeroeg, sang pribumi ini mulai berubah.. Mungkin dia sadar,
bahwa bangsa si tokoh 'aku' ini adalah bangsa yang menjajah bangsanya. Timbullah jiwa
patriotismenya dan sahabat kecilnya pun akhirnya menjadi jauh. Hubungan mereka renggang
dan 'aku' makin tak mengenal Oeroeg lagi.
Ketika akhirnya 'aku' pergi belajar dan sibuk dengan kegiatannya sendiri, keadaan di Hindia
juga berubah. 'Aku' yang merasakan kerinduan dengan tanah kelahirannya ini ingin kembali lagi
ke Hindia. Namun ternyata sambutan bagi bangsanya tak lagi ramah. Hindia yang dianggapnya
sebagai tanah kelahiran menolaknya. Bahkan Oeroeg pun menodongkan senjata padanya.
Ya iyalaahhh, sapa suruh dateng ke Batavia ya? :p

with the locals for being a meeting place for departed souls and it was said that Nenah Kombel,
a vampire disguised as an old woman, lived there and feasted upon dead children.

language literature – tells the tale of a, possibly naive, Dutch narrator who seems to be again on
his friendship with a boy known as Oeroeg. either boys have been born and raised within the
Dutch East Indies. whereas the narrator is the son of a Dutch leader of a tea plantation, Oeroeg
is the son of the neighborhood maid of the narrator’s family and his father works for the Dutch
leader as well. however the men develop up jointly and turn into friends, regardless of the
narrator’s father who concerns approximately his son’s courting to the neighborhood Oeroeg.

menciptakan suka & duka, tanah yang memberikannya kehidupan. Dan "Aku" sendiri bukanlah
"inlander", dia seorang Belanda, anak seorang "administrateur", yang notabene membuatnya
menjadi seorang "sinyo" walaupun "Aku" selalu merasa dirinya "Inlander". Dan kenyataan itu
mulai nampak jelas di mata "Aku" seiringan dengan waktu. Ia tidak pernah mau merasa
berbeda dengan penduduk Hindia, nyatanya "Oeroeg" sahabatnya sendiri mulai
memandangnya dengan berbeda."Oeroeg", tokoh ini mengingatkan saya akan "Tito" dalam
"Burung-Burung Manyar" karya YB Mangunwijaya. Saya melihat Oeroeg, yang tidak memiliki
ketegasan sikap, yang bingung menempatkan dirinya. Plin-plan. Oeroeg kecil yang
memandang dunia dengan khas anak-anak, tanpa mempedulikan perbedaan antara dia dan
"Aku". Oeroeg remaja yang merasa menjadi "Indo" adalah suatu kebanggaan sehingga
membuatnya melupakan asal usulnya dan Oeroeg dewasa yang nasionalismenya berkobar.
Atau memang di masa itu terjadi krisis identitas karena ketidakjelasan nasib tanah yang
ditinggali? Mungkin.Apakah Oeroeg mempunyai kesamaan pikiran dalam memaknai arti Tanah
Kelahiran dengan tokoh "Aku"? Saya berharap Oeroeg memaknai sama dengan "Aku". Tanah
kelahiran, tanah yang menghembuskan nyawa dan kehidupan dalam raga. Oia..satu hal lagi.
Nggak tau dech sama dengan yang lain atau tidak. Selain mengenai tanah kelahiran, ada yang
saya tangkap lagi dari kisah ini. Saya melihat kisah ini sebenarnya menceritakan "Aku" dengan
menggunakan "Oeroeg" sebagai penggambaran perkembangan jati diri serta kehidupan
seorang "Aku".
Adisti: Buku ini menceritakan tentang seorang anak Belanda yang lahir di Sukabumi. Dia
berteman akrab dengan Oeroeg, anak seorang jongos di rumahnya. Pertemanan mereka
dianggap aneh oleh orang pada masa itu. Karena anak Belanda tidak biasanya berteman akrab
dengan anak pribumi pada masa kolonial saat itu. Semakin mereka dewasa, mereka pun
semakin sadar akan perbedaan di antara mereka.Dari bedah buku yang gw ikuti, gw jadi tahu
kalau buku terbitan tahun 1948 ini masih dibaca hingga kini oleh orang Belanda. Bahkan buku
ini pernah difilmkan. Buku ini juga sempat dikritik oleh orang Belanda karena terlalu memihak
pribumi (Indonesia). Padahal sang pengarang asli orang Belanda. Buku ini juga merupakan
bacaan wajib mahasiswa sastra Belanda di Indonesia.Dari segi penulisannya sendiri sih, gw
agak bosan dengan terlalu dalamnya deskripsi alam yang ditonjolkan penulis. Gaya
penulisannya juga 'cewek' banget. Walaupun si tokoh 'aku' itu jelas-jelas cwo. Cuma
