«SANTO È IL TEMPIO DI DIO, CHE SIETE VOI!»
DEDICAZIONE DELLA BASILICA LATERANENSE
A Basilica del Laterano è la cattedrale del Vescovo di Roma, che “presiede nella carità” (sant’Ireneo) a tutte le chiese
locali. L’anniversario della sua celebrazione, svolto originariamente solo a Roma, si commemora da tutte le comunità di
rito romano. Fin dal tempo dei patriarchi, il popolo di Dio ha eretto templi in cui riconosceva in special modo la presenza
del Signore: la tenda del Convegno, che fremeva al vento del deserto, quando Mosè dialogava faccia a faccia con Dio; il
tempio di Salomone, dimora stabile del Signore degli eserciti in mezzo al suo popolo.
C’è sempre stata, però, la consapevolezza, indicata particolarmente dai profeti, che Dio è presente ed è all’azione in tutta
la creazione (I Lettura) e che l’uomo è il vero tempio di Dio (II Lettura). Le costruzioni umane possono facilitare
l’incontro con il Signore, e perciò devono essere onorate e rispettate (Vangelo), ricordando, tuttavia, che il vero incontro
si realizza nel cuore dell’uomo, attraverso l’amore a Cristo, realizzato nell’ascolto della sua Parola e nella celebrazione

DEDICATION OF THE LATERAN BASILICA
CHURCH: UPPERCASE OR lower? Building? Institution? People? Yes.
That’s the challenge of this feast that celebrates a building – the Lateran Cathedral built around 324. It – not St. Peter’s as many might
believe – is the cathedral church of Rome. It exercises the same function as the cathedral church in any diocese: it is a gathering place
for the people of that diocese, and a visible sign of who and what the church is in the world.
The c/Church, like God’s holy people, is watered and anointed. In the Rite of Dedication of a Church, water is blessed and sprinkled on
the building’s walls as a “sign of the saving waters of baptism by which we become one in Christ, the temple of your Spirit.” Then the
altar and the walls are anointed with chrism, the same chrism with which every new Catholic Christian is anointed in Baptism and
Confirmation, and the bishop prays that the building will be a “visible sign of the mystery of Christ and his Church.” Then, in a gesture
reminiscent of the candles given to the newly baptized, candles are lit, to the words, “Light of Christ, shine forth in the Church.”
Today, then, celebrates the Church, of which the church as building is a symbol. It calls us to remember our dignity as a temple built of

2015 CATECHISM CLASSES Registration Open Registration for our Pre-­‐school, First Holy Communion and Confirmation Preparation classes for 2015 is now open. Classes will start on January 11, 2015 at 9:20 a.m. sharp. We have a very good reputation for preparing our children for these precious sacraments, and we encourage all parents with children wishing to receive their First Holy Communion and Confirmation to register.
