What EndNote Does

Click the EndNote icon on the desktop
Select “Create a new EndNote library”
Save into: My Documents
Name it: YourNameTest. Click “Save”

1. In your EndNote Library, double click
on a record to open it for editing
2. Scroll down to the Keywords field and
add some keywords
3. File > Close Reference

General steps:
1. Search in database
2. Select records, if necessary select
format (usually tagged fields)
3. Direct Export
4. Designate which EndNote Library to
export the records to

Go to BIOSIS (ISI)
Search for African bees in Topic. Click SEARCH
Check 5 records
Output Records:
Step 1. ◙ Selected Records on page
Step 2. ◙ Select Full Record
Step 3. Click Save to EndNote, RefMan, ProCite
Click EXPORT
Select a Reference Library Look in My Documents
Click on your EndNote Library. Click OPEN. Voila!
3. Export/Import
Two Step Process:
1. EXPORT
Search on topic in database.
Save references and name file.
2. IMPORT
In EndNote, File > Import. Find your file
and select Import Option (filter) for database

Part 1. EXPORT
1. Go to PubMed
2. Search for: Italian bees Click GO
3. Check 3 records.
Display (pull-down menu) MEDLINE.
4. Check the 3 records again. Send to TEXT.
5. File> Save as… Save in: My Documents
File name italianbees
Save as type: Text File. Click SAVE

In EndNote: File > Import…
Import Data File> Click CHOOSE FILE.
Look in My Documents for italianbees. Click OPEN.
Import Option (the filter for the database):
Select PubMed (NLM) if listed. If not, go to Other
Filters… and find and choose PubMed (NLM).
Click IMPORT.
Sort and Search

Click on Field (Author, Year, or Title)
For multi-field sorts, Click on
Search
1. Click on binoculars
2. Select “All Fields” from pull down menu
3. Type in term. Click search.
4. Direct Search
This method does not work with all databases
e.g. Not with BIOSIS (ISI), Yes with Web of Science (ISI)
For database specific information regarding Direct Search
check the UCR Libraries website pages on EndNote
General steps for most databases:
1. From the toolbar: Tools > Online Search > New Search
2. Choose A Connection (pick the connection file for
the database you want to search)
3. EndNote Search box appears. Enter your search.
4. Select records and Click Copy All References to
Direct Search

In EndNote Library, from the toolbar:
Tools > Online Search > New Search

Select Web of Science (ISI)
Search for Caucasian bees In Field:
Title/Keywords/Abstract. Click SEARCH.
Pop-up box appears. For this exercise, only
Retrieve References 1 through 10. Click OK.
Highlight four (from the list of 10) references to
keep. Click COPY SELECTED TO
Select your EndNote Library
Caveats for Direct Search
• When doing Direct Search from home, you must
connect to databases in UCR Libraries via client VPN
• The EndNote search box is simple compared to the
robust search engines in the native database
interfaces. Compare search capabilities and results:
EndNote vs native database.
• You need a both a connection file and filter. (If not
working as expected, call the UCR Libraries.)
Formats/Styles
Styles available on toolbar:
“Select Another Style” from pull-down menu
“Preview Style” from pull-down menu
Click CHOOSE
(Styles can be modified or customized.)

Highlight a reference in your EndNote Library
Open practice Word document (located on the
desktop in a folder labeled EndNote Lab File)
In the practice document, place the cursor where
you want the reference to go
Click INSERT
An EndNote placemarker will be generated
referencing the selected record of step 1.
Make Bibliography
You Do It
1. After all the citations are inserted…
2. Format Bibliography
3. You will be prompted to select output style.
Click Browse and select a style
4. To change style: Step 2 again
