Search PubMed; select references to import;
with no selections, all get imported
Change Display format to MEDLINE
Click Send to (file); name your file (.txt) –
remembering where you saved it!
Return to EndNote- Open your library
Select Import from the File menu.
Choose file and import option (filter) – to get
list, choose Other Filters
Select the PubMed filter
Click the Import button
PubMed search – select articles
Change format to

Send to File
Save and Name the file
Save and name
Go to EndNote
Open library
Select File --Import
Locate saved file
Select correct filter
Locate PubMed filter
Hit “Import” button

Rules for direct entry of references

Enter one author/editor name per line
Format author names:
Last name, first name
Last name, initials (use a space or periods)
Enter all author names – no et al.
Use a comma after corporate names:
Ex.: U.S. Department of Agriculture,
Journal names – controlled by the

Book, or Web page reference type for
citing material from a Web page BUT
For a journal article that appears both online
and in print, use the regular Journal

Save the PDF to your hard drive
Open EndNote library and select the
reference to link to the PDF
From the References Menu, select:
PDF -- “Link to PDF”
Browse to the PDF and select it

Or drag and drop

The PDF icon will appear in the
“ Link to PDF” field and column

To open a linked PDF file
Select or open a reference in the Library
window

Choose PDF-Open PDF from the
References menu

The PDF file should open in Acrobat
Reader
NOTE: You can delete the orginal PDF file (as

long as default checkmark remains to copy the original PDF
file and place it in the DATA\PDF folder)
Link to PDF management
•EndNote places the PDF copy in the DATA
folder for that library
•EndNote will always be able to access the file,
even when you share your library with a
colleague (always include the complete DATA
folder along with the .ENL file) –
•Use File- Send to– Compressed Library
