Communication • I will make copies of the sheets you put your contact information on. It is extremely important you keep in touch with your classmates and with me so you don’t fall behind. • My email is [email protected] • Leave a message with Ms. Romero or in my mailbox if you have any emergencies. • Have your parents call in when you are ill or otherwise not coming in. You need to request make-up work at that time. Communication • My email: [email protected] –You will need to email me asap. Don’t send me an email that says “Here’s my email.” Your email address may be something like– [email protected] but seriously think about using the first initials of your name and last name. [email protected] or [email protected] is much better. You need to include your name, the class name and the period you are enrolled in. Do this no later than August 25th. I am putting classes into groups . . . 10 point assignment to establish communication. Print out my response when you receive it to prove you did it JIC (just in case). Taking Notes • It is easier for me to see if you are taking notes if you follow a prescribed method of taking notes. One of the ways I have accomplished this in the past is by using Cornell Notetaking. Yes, you do get credit for taking notes because taking notes is part of the binder grade you receive each month or so – I check up every so often. Binder checks will be announced, but you should keep on top of it so you don’t get caught empty-handed. A zero on a binder means a letter grader (10%). Cornell Format -- Notes Topic of notes Name____________________________ Date___________________Period_____ Class_____________________________ Objectives: 1. Find and describe patterns. 2. Use inductive reasoning to make real-life conjectures. Assignment: pp. 6-8 #1-46 Main point #1: Finding and Describing Patterns Geometry, like much of mathematics and science, developed when people began recognizing and describing patterns. The Binder • 1.5 to 2 inches with 5 sections. Dividers are necessary. You will have this organized by August 25. Be prepared to fail if you don’t have this. • 5 sections are as follows: – – – – – Warm-ups Notes –in Cornell format Assignments (stamped work – graded in class) Returned work Handouts – Resource materials Notes about the binder grade • For your binder to be graded an A you must: – Have it on test day – Have all assignments completed by test date. – Have 3 pages for each section of notes . . . There are usually about 6-7 sections per chapter. You can get these from your neighbor, your textbook or on-line at the school website http://www.taosschools.org/ths – Definitions/Postulates & Theorems and any formulas from the chapter must accessible. – Warm-ups – come from the end of each section names “Mixed Review.” – In-class project type work – things we worked on in class More Frequency Distributions Statistics Mrs. Spitz Fall 2008 Objectives • Go over answers to HW #1 • Provide students with practice of concepts presented. • Understand how to organize data in a frequency distribution. Assignment • Pg. 527-528 #1-20 • The assignment is just a variation of what you did this last weekend. Answer the questions. • DUE TOMORROW. Turn in your homework asap • DO NOT WAIT TO TURN YOUR HOMEWORK IN AFTER CLASS OR IT WILL BE A ZERO. I WILL COLLECT THESE AND PUT THEM IN A SEPARATE FOLDER. IF YOU DID NOT TURN IT IN . . .YOU NOW HAVE A ZERO. PAY ATTENTION TO EXTRA CREDIT. HOMEWORK #1 • Problems 1 and 2 use the information following. An insurance adjuster has tabulated the dollar amount of 50 auto accident claims. The results are given in the table that follows. 475 224 722 721 815 351 596 625 981 748 993 881 361 560 574 742 703 998 435 873 882 278 455 803 985 305 522 900 638 810 677 688 410 505 890 186 829 631 882 991 484 339 950 579 539 422 326 793 453 118 First find the smallest and the largest numbers • The least is 118 and the most is 998. • Next find the range by subtracting the smaller from the larger 998-118 = 880 • Next find the class width by dividing the range by the # of classes (8). 880/8 = 110 • Finally, construct the frequency distribution. Frequency Distribution Classes 118-228 229-339 340-450 451-561 562-672 673-783 784-894 895-1,005 Tally III IIII IIIII IIIIIIII IIIIII IIIIIII IIIIIIIIII IIIIIII Frequency 3 4 5 8 6 7 10 7 Finally problem #2 Using the frequency table from Problem #1, find what percent of the total claims were between $451 and $672. pB = A p(50) = 8 + 6 p(50) = 14 p= 14/50 p = 0.28 or 28% Classes Tally 118-228 229-339 340-450 451-561 562-672 673-783 784-894 895-1,005 III IIII IIIII IIIIIIII IIIIII IIIIIII IIIIIIIIII IIIIIII Frequenc y 3 4 5 8 6 7 10 7 QUESTIONS OVER HOMEWORK? What if I’m absent . . . • If you will be absent, you need to turn in your homework either downstairs with Ms. Romero in my mailbox that day or hand-deliver it to me when you return with a parent note telling me why the work is late. -- if it becomes habitual (after 3), I require a parent conference. If your absence is not excused . . . it will not be accepted. If you do not turn in any work, expect a phone call home. • I won’t take late homework. Daily stamped work is not worth a whole lot anyhow. The test grades are worth far more. I have 166 students . . . I don’t have enough time to go back and grade these. If you miss an assignment; you may come in after school and work on it in front of me. Additional extra credit is sometimes available. Extra Credit? • If you miss any assignments – you may earn up to 2 extra credit assignments by bringing in a box(es) of tissue – and not the tiny boutique type. This offer is open until the end of August only. • Thereafter, you will have to walk for our senior class in the Walk-aMile-in-My-Shoes Walk-a-thon for the Dreamtree project. $10 to enter and you can find sponsors if you wish. • Homecoming activities. We have the hallways, the float, the car bash, the pep rally, and Powder puff. Dress up days will earn you a little bit as well. Last day for homecoming activity EC is September 19.
