Introducing OS MasterMap Challenges of new data for Digimap Emma Sutton EDINA Geoservices Support Introduction • • • Land-Line is being replaced by OS MasterMap Topographic Layer Digimap will need adjustments to cope with this change OS will withdraw support and licences for Land-Line on 30 September 2008 What is OS MasterMap? • “OS MasterMap is a digital representation of the real world containing more than 450 million uniquely identified geographic features. It is updated daily as a consistent framework for the referencing of geographic information in Great Britain.“* • A framework rather than a single dataset • Framework comprises various Layers: Topographic, ITN, Imagery, Address Each Layer comprises a series of Themes • *www.ordnancesurvey.co.uk What’s better about OS MasterMap? • Land-Line is a digital cartography product–a map designed to be viewed on a computer • OS MasterMap is not just about mapping • OS MasterMap Topography Layer is a feature-based dataset; many of the features correspond to realworld objects • Each feature has a unique identifier called a TOID® • Allows you to build data associations and to more easily exchange information with other people or organisations • As a feature changes to reflect changes to the realworld object it represents, its TOID may remain unchanged, according to well–defined feature life– cycle rules Timetable for transition 16 January 2007 Pilot service launch to Early Adopter Institutions January – August 2007 Ongoing feedback 31 August 2007 End of Early Adopter Programme September 2007 OS MasterMap available to all subscribers September 2007 – August 2008 OS MasterMap and Land-Line both available August 2008 Land-Line withdrawn from Digimap completely A process of integration Early Adopter Programme to trial OS MasterMap data and delivery facilities • Early Adopter institutions have access to the new MasterMap Download facility • Users at these institutions should expect to use MasterMap data where previously they might have used Land-Line data • Land-Line continues to be available until August 2008 (2006 version only) • Feedback requested from end users directly and from site support staff • Who’s involved? • 7 Early Adopter institutions are: – – – – – – – Kingston University Leeds University Liverpool University Liverpool Hope University University of the West of England (UWE) Oxford University University of Central Lancashire Aims of the Early Adopter Programme For EDINA • To learn about the technical issues encountered by institutions when using MasterMap data for the first time • To assist with the development of appropriate tools • Usability testing • To identify the support needs of institutions when moving from using Land-Line to MasterMap • To learn about the implications of MasterMap for teaching and research Aims of the Early Adopter Programme For institutions • To identify new hardware and software requirements for being able to use MasterMap data • To identify potential changes required for organising classes and teaching materials • To become accustomed to using MasterMap whilst operating with the comfort of LandLine back-up • To assist EDINA in developing appropriate support systems to assist other subscribing institutions to adopt MasterMap data What changes are being made? Mapping • all Land-Line maps will be replaced with OS MasterMap Topographic maps Classic will look and operate as usual Carto will look and operate as usual BUT Product combinations may differ MasterMap Download – New! • • MasterMap Download is a NEW facility which will offer only OS MasterMap data Existing Data Download facility remains the same Search for area of interest • Usual search tools available to locate area of interest Select area of interest • Select area of interest using one of: – drag-box – coordinates – point-and-buffer Summary Information • Extent Summary – Shows the extent of the data selected • Sample Content – at the moment only shows representative data • Request Name – Enter a name if you want to save the request for later Data Delivery Settings • Archiving – Unix, PC, Mac? – Single or separate files? • Compression – Data will always be compressed with gzip • Format – Data will be in GML format • Type of Supply – For the moment only Initial Supply is available • EMAIL ADDRESS! – Is it correct? – Edit if necessary prior to ordering data Data Delivery • Check your email! – You will be sent an email when your data is ready • View Your Account – For progress information or to change your email go to Your Account page Collecting your data • User receives email when data is ready for collection • Go to My Account, enter code from email and save data link as usual Change-only Update OS MasterMap will be updated using Changeonly Update • EDINA will take changes from OS every 6-8 weeks • Practically, we will offer once, twice or 4times a year updates… • Frequency of update to users has yet to be decided… how often would YOU like the data updated? • Users can take either complete re-supply (including changes) or JUST the changes (Change-only Update or COU) • Key implications of OS MasterMap • File sizes are considerably larger than existing NTF data – implications for disk storage and network traffic • Maps now include filled polygons which will print better in colour than in black and white – how widespread is the availability of colour printers? – implications for printing costs – implications for ink usage?! • • Latest versions of GIS and CAD software will be required to manage new data format (GML) User email addresses must be correct on registration or data cannot be delivered to them Other things to note • OS MasterMap Layers are “just another” dataset added to Digimap • 2006 Land-Line data will be available until August 2008, but will not be updated • Terms of Use for OS MasterMap are identical to those for other data • Check the further information on our website at: http://edina.ac.uk/mastermap • Any questions…?
