S U Sarah Hathaway, Kristen Kearney, & Shawn Lamb (Team Leader) Canisius College 2013 Virtual Case Study Competition Transforming Sunnyvale University: Our Campus & Our Community student education & community partnerships A Presentation By: The Dean of Students The SU Community Relations Committee Committee Initiatives The main priority of this committee is to ensure that by 2016, campus and community relationships are strengthened through the efforts of student education and community engagement. The University will implement policies and procedures that hold students accountable for their actions both on and off campus. The University will intentionally engage students in educational programs focused on their holistic development and increased consciousness of self. The University will develop partnerships and strengthen engagement opportunities within Sunnyvale, NH through collaborative outreach efforts. Committee Members Dean of Students Director of Residence Life Director of Student Activities Director of Health and Wellness Center Director of Campus Safety Director of Community Outreach Director of Public Relations Deputy Mayor Student Government President & Vice President Breakdown of Initiatives S U Utilization of Social Media We will use traditional means of communication to broadcast and advertise the committee initiatives, in addition to expanding our use of the following social media outlets: Twitter, Facebook, and Instagram - Over the past three weeks, each office on this committee has created Twitter and Instagram accounts and a Facebook page, and other offices are being encouraged to do the same UniversityWebsite - Information regarding the plans of this committee will be available to the public via the website. www.sunnyvale.edu/communityinitiatives YouTube - An account has been created where students and administrators can post videos from campus and community events and highlight department initiatives/programs Public Relations Webpage- On the Public Relations webpage, links to university related social media will be featured under the "Connect with Us" section University Blog- The Public Relations Office will monitor a blog with weekly information on campus events and happenings within the community Additional social media platforms will be used by offices as they see fit (Flickr, LinkedIn, etc.) Department Roles Each member involved in this committee will be responsible for the implementation of 1-2 efforts within their respective offices These efforts will be executed in the following manner: Creation of policies, initiatives, and opportunities Collaboration with campus and local community members Communication efforts supplemented by the utilization of social media Dean of Students Judicial Sanctioning Create: Students found in violation of the community standards will be sanctioned community service experiences by the judicial hearing officers. Collaborate: Community Outreach Office Communicate: At the end of each academic year, the Dean of Students will compile statistics and information based on the number of community service hours completed by students within the judicial system. These statistics will be monitored to track progress. Dean of Students Review of Student Handbook Create: The Dean of Students will review the Student Handbook. As there is currently no policy regarding off campus behavior, the Dean will draft a new policy to be implemented in the fall 2013 semester. Collaborate: Residence Life Campus Safety STUDENT HANDBOOK 2013 Communicate: Communication of this new policy will remain internal, until it is completed. At that point, it will become available to the public via the Student Handbook, which is on the Sunnyvale University website. Residence Life Registered Party Policy ! Create: The Director of Residence Life will create a "Party Policy" to be implemented in the fall 2013 semester. Students who are interested in hosting a party on campus will submit an application to be reviewed by a board of administrators. The board will ensure that the students have met all criteria before being approved. Collaborate: Dean of Students Campus Safety Health and Wellness Center S U Communicate: Website: Forms and applications will be available on the Residence Life website. www.sunnyvale.edu/resl ife/partypolicy Residence Life Programming Create: RAs in each residence hall will host two alcohol-related programs per semester. One program will be based on alcohol education and the other will be a late-night, alcoholalternative program. Collaborate: Health and Wellness Center Student Activities Communicate: @SUResLife for advertisements, updates & photos (#SmithHall; #BestHall; #BlueHall; #StrongHall) Join the SU Residence Life group for information regarding programs & housing options @SUResLife for photos of events Photo albums from programs will be available online Residence Life Neighborhood Meetings ! Create: The Assistant Director of Residence Life will host a monthly meeting, open to landlords, community members, and students residing in the neighborhood. This meeting will focus on concerns or developments of any attendees. Create: A six-week leadership development course grounded in leadership theory is available to current students. This course focuses on selfassessment, personal reflection, servant leadership, and the Social Change Model. A new component of the course is a final assignment requiring students to create a community change project to be implemented in Sunnyvale. Create: Currently all students in violation of the community standards are sanctioned to complete alcoholedu.com. Beginning in the Fall of 2013, all incoming students will be required to complete alcoholedu.com prior to attending New Student Orientation. Collaborate: Health and Wellness Center Dean of Students Residence Life S U Communicate: Website: alcoholedu.com @SUwelcomeweek @SUOrientation Health and Wellness Center Healthy Living &Programming ! Create: The Health and Wellness Center will provide two major programs per semester; one focused on the importance of living a healthy lifestyle and one on the dangers of alcohol consumption. Create: Staff will lead in the coordination of a Sunnyvale community 5K race that will: connect student organizations and the local Sunnyvale school district; raise funds for a local charity; bring the community together for a postrace celebration; and dedicate a space oncampus symbolizing the unity amongst communities. Create: Officers will be hired to patrol the streets adjacent to campus. These officers will address noise concerns, respond to house parties, and issue citations to students for behavioral concerns. Create: Facilitate the production of promotional video on the importance of service-learning in relation to positive college student development and the establishment of meaningful campus/community relationships. This video will highlight testimonials from students, faculty, Community Outreach staff, and community partners. S U Email: send out monthly enewsletter to campus and local community Future Plans This committee is scheduled to meet at the beginning of each semester to discuss plans. The Dean of Students will discuss the committee initiatives with each department director on a weekly basis. Our University will strive to implement new social media platforms as they emerge. The Dean of Students will collaborate with ITS to implement various training sessions on how to effectively utilize social media. A large-scale assessment will be conducted in the Spring of 2016 to assess our progress and completion of committee initiatives. References Biddix, J. (2010).
