Community Relations Task Force

 Create events for town/gown to interact in a positive environment  Develop opportunities for students to serve within the community  Form a collaborative relationship between Sunnyvale and the University  Strategize for the areas of Promotion, Being a Good Neighbor, Presence in the Community, and Future Planning

Mission Statement

The Community Relations Task Force is committed to fostering a healthy and collaborative relationship that improves the quality of life for all citizens of Sunnyvale Township and the students of Sunnyvale University.

 Local Businesses-The Neighborhood Fair  At some point throughout the first six weeks of the fall semester, local businesses will be invited to the Quad to promote their business to the students. These businesses will be promoted by the University and in exchange will be a sponsor and promotional partner with the University.

 Real Estate-Employee & Family  The University will create an residents of Sunnyvale. “ Employee & Family to Sunnyvale ” program which will assist employees in establishing themselves as

 Town/Gown-Open Campus Campaign  The University will create a campaign targeting the township to welcome the community members into the University. The University will offer discounts on different facilities and memberships and will invite community members to large scale programming that is occurring on campus. The University will also work to promote more community oriented spaces on campus.

Be A Good Neighbor

 Town Hall Meetings  The University will host bi-monthly town hall meetings on campus. This will create a forum for residents to express any concerns they have with the University or the students and vice versa.

 “ Be A Good Neighbor ”  Brochure Landlords will distribute a brochure to new student tenants on “ neighborly etiquette University.

 Local Landlord Meetings  The University will invite local landlords to monthly meetings to discuss any problems that they are having with student tenants and suggested solutions that they come up with.  The University will work with landlords (and local homeowners) to get community members two campus parking decals per household and one guest pass should they need to park on campus.

 Social Media Outlets  The University will promote Sunnyvale Township social networking sites which will promote community events, specials, and important information. Students will then be able to be more intertwined with the community.

Presence in the Community

 Restorative Justice Sanctions  University judicial systems will incorporate restorative justice into the judicial and sanctioning philosophy.

 Sanctions-Students who are found responsible will go into the community to do service. Examples would include a local soup kitchen or afterschool enrichment program.

 Nuisance Reporting Protocols  If students are reported and cited by local law enforcement, there will be a report back to the University ’ s Dean of Students. The student will then have to go through the University ’ s judicial process.

 Partnerships with Local Schools   The University will establish partnerships with local schools to get University students into the classrooms as tutors or mentors.

College Credit Courses-The University will offer general education courses for high school honors students to earn college credit.

 Sunnyvale Service Day  The University will create a service day focused on the local community. The day will consist of clean-ups, refurbishing of homes, volunteering, etc..

Future Planning

 Community Relations Department  This office will orchestrate the Community Relations Board. The Board will consist of the Mayor, Alderman, 2 local principals, 2 local homeowners, 2 landlords, and representation from the President ’ s Office, Provost ’ s Office, Housing, Campus Safety, and any other stakeholders  Affiliate Off-Campus Housing  The University will establish off-campus housing that is affiliated with the University but run by off-campus landlords. The University will upkeep the property in conjunction with the building operators and will suggest students to live in this facility.

Future Planning

 Increased Housing  The University will make plans to designate non-disruptive housing areas for future housing.

 Sunnyvale HS to Sunnyvale U  This program is designed to promote local high school senior to apply to Sunnyvale University. The top 20 students will be able to attend Sunnyvale University tuition-free.

Why is this Important?

 Urie Bronfenbrenner ’ s the Ecological theory explains that the surrounding neighborhood does influence the behavior and success of the individual.
