Car Occupant Injuries Caused By Loading From Luggage
Data Evaluation of BASt/Hannover In Depth Accident Study
Presented to GRSP December 1994
• Time period: 1985 - 1992
• Accidents representative for Germany
• All accidents were reconstructed
• 5335 passenger cars
• In 17 cars (0.3%) occupants were injured by unattached objects or luggage
• 14 MAIS 1, 1 MAIS 2 (from hot bitumen), 1 MAIS 4 (from 4 wintertyres),
1 Mais 6 (catastrophic accident, AIS 3 pelvis fractures were caused by tool box)
• In 6 cars luggage had moved from luggage compartment to passenger compartment
in all these cars there was no partition between boot and passenger compartment
• 5 cars of these had a frontal impact,1 car of these had a rear impact
• In the rear impact the head injuries were caused by contacts to chairs transported
in the passenger compartment
• In 9 cars (4 side-, 3 frontal- and 2 rollover collisions) the occupants were injured by
objects transported in the passenger compartment
• In 2 cars the occupants were injured by objects transported on the rear window shelf
(in one car various objects, in the other car loudspeakers)

New In Depth Accident Data Evaluation to GRSP 2004
GIDAS - German In Depth Accident Sampling System
• data statistically representative for Germany
• alarm of police and research team simultaneously
• after completion of data collection, research team
approaches to the next reported accident
CCIS - Loughborough Univ./UK
• tow away accidents
• data collection partially retrospective

Remark:
The seat occupant injury rate for MAIS 3+ is highest when the seat back has been struck by luggage (25.7%)
compared to an 8.3% rate when the seat back has not been struck. This does not confirm that the luggage
was a direct cause of serious injury. However, the injury causation codes suggest that the reason for the
higher rates of moderate and serious injury are not due to the luggage.

Slide Nr. 7
Car Occupant Injuries Caused By Loading From Luggage
Summary:
• German accident data (GIDAS) suggest that in frontal car impacts
0,54% of the car occupants are injured from luggage load
• Great Britain accident data (CCIS) suggest that in frontal car impacts
1,97% of the car occupants are injured from luggage load
Conclusion:
• German accident data collection method is intended to collect
accident which are representative for Germany
• Great Britain accident sampling system collects more severe accidents,
so the representative figure might be lower.
