Enemy Prisoner of War Instructor: SSG Beasley Task, Condition, and Standards TASK: To perform a search of an EPW, recognize the 5 S’s, and what is meant by them. CONDITION: Given a block of instructions, a demostration, and reference material from FM 7-8. STANDARD: To correctly perform a search of a EPW, and answer Check on Learning questions correctly, and be able to discuss the 5 S’s and distinguish between each. RISK ASSESSMENT LOW The Soldier’s Rules • Soldiers fight only enemy combatants. • Soldiers do not harm enemies who surrender. They disarm them and turn them over to their superior. • Soldiers do not kill or torture enemy prisoners of war. • Soldiers protect and care for the wounded, whether friend or foe. • Soldiers do not attack medical personnel, facilities or equipment. • Soldiers destroy no more than the mission requires. • Soldiers treat civilians humanely. • Soldiers do not steal. Soldiers respect private property and possessions. • Soldiers do their best to prevent violations of the law of war. • Soldiers report all violations of the law of war to their superior. The 5 S’s Search/Segregate Separate Search • Start from Head to Foot • Inspect any area susceptible to hiding important information: - Head, Kevlar, Collar - Underarms - Waist Line, Crotch - Inner leg, Ankles * Inspect equipment if time permits. •Ensure to segregate between: - Rank - Sex - Military Association Wrong Right Company Perimeter Segregate Male, Female, Enlisted, Officer, Army, Navy Males Enlisted Navy Enemy Personnel Officers Army Females •Keep the prisoners silent and ensure they are unable to communicate with each other. Silence Useful Techniques: - Blindfold - Zip Tie Hands - Cover Mouth with Handkerchief - Zip Tie Feet • Separate the enemy as quickly and as efficiently as possible Wrong Right Company Perimeter Separate Enemy Personnel - All personnel are entitled to safety when in the care of any military unit. - Personnel who are in your custody are also entitled to having certain items safeguard by you or allowed to keep on themselves. Safeguard Items prisoners are allowed to keep: - personal items * Religious Items * Family Pictures * Medical Aid Equipment Check on Learning Q. What are the 5S’s? A. Search, Segregate, Silence, Separate, Safeguard Q. What does Segregate mean? A. To separate enlisted from officer, males from females, and to separate different military services from each other. Q.
