Real-time Assessment
Using a Classroom
Response System
What is it?
H-ITT is a classroom response system that
allows real-time interactions between the
instructor and the class that engages
students in the learning process through
immediate, anonymous feedback.
Students respond electronically to questions
posed by the instructor and that data is
immediately displayed graphically.
How it Works





Generate questions using power point
Import that file into the Acquisitions module
Set preferences (layout, email, timer, etc.)
Ask ‘clicker’ questions as you teach
Results are emailed to you when you close
the program
Implementation



Library Facilities mounted receivers
Library Systems department installed
software and connected receivers to
computer
Campus Computing & Communications
provided several staff training workshops
The System

Receiver
$200 each
(approx. 1
receiver needed
per 20 remotes)

Remote control
$25 each

Software
Free
The Software

Acquisitions Module
–

Allows you to ‘acquire’
responses from the
audience
Analyzer Module
–
Provides results in a
variety of ways for
analyzing

Instruction Impact



Instruction is focused on students’ need
Students are more engaged
Entire class can see the results
Advantages






Anonymity
Increased student involvement
Results are visible to the entire class
Can be used as a discussion starter
Can be used as an ice breaker
Students can change their answers
Challenges





Requires advance development of questions
Cannot create questions within the software
‘on-the-fly,’ must be verbalized
Slows down pace of class
Requires flexibility in teaching style
Writing good, thoughtful questions difficult
