SEVEN PILLARS OF THE CHURCH
Proverbs 9:1 Wisdom has built her house, She has
hewn out her seven pillars;
The number 7 is used to symbolize perfection,
fullness, abundance, rest, and completion.
• After the 6th day of Creation God rested on the 7th
(Gen. 2).
• The Jews were to keep the 7th day as a day of rest (Ex.
20:8).
• Naaman had to dip 7 times in the Jordan River before he
was healed (2 Kgs. 5).
• The Pharaoh dreamed about two groups of animals
containing 7 each, which represented 7 years of plenty
and 7 years of famine (Gen. 41).
• Jesus cast out 7 demons from Mary Magdalene (Lk. 8:2).
• Jesus fed 4000 with 7 loaves and few small fish (Mt. 15).
• The book of revelation uses the number 7 frequently.
Webster:
1. The general and popular term for a firm,
upright, insulated support for a superstructure; a
pier, column, or post; also, a column or shaft not
supporting a superstructure, as one erected for a
monument or an ornament.
2. Figuratively, that which resembles such a pillar
in appearance, character, or office.
Galatians 2:9 and when James, Cephas, and John,
who seemed to be pillars, perceived the grace
that had been given to me, they gave me and
Barnabas the right hand of fellowship, that we
should go to the Gentiles and they to the
circumcised.
Ephesians 2:19 Now, therefore, you are no longer
strangers and foreigners, but fellow citizens with
the saints and members of the household of God,
20 having been built on the foundation of the
apostles and prophets, Jesus Christ Himself being
the chief cornerstone,
1 Timothy 3:15 but if I am delayed, I write so
that you may know how you ought to conduct
yourself in the house of God, which is the church
of the living God, the pillar and ground of the
truth.
Ephesians 2:21 in whom the whole building,
being joined together, grows into a holy temple in
the Lord, 22 in whom you also are being built
together for a dwelling place of God in the Spirit.
1 Peter 2:5 you also, as living stones, are being
built up a spiritual house, a holy priesthood, to
offer up spiritual sacrifices acceptable to God
through Jesus Christ.
1. A Converted membership
John 8:31 If you abide in My word, you are My
disciples indeed. 32 "And you shall know the
truth, and the truth shall make you free."
Romans 10:1 Brethren, my heart's desire and
prayer to God for Israel is that they may be
saved. 2 For I bear them witness that they have
a zeal for God, but not according to knowledge. 3
For they being ignorant of God's righteousness,
and seeking to establish their own righteousness,
have not submitted to the righteousness of God.
Matthew 7:21 " Not everyone who says to Me, 'Lord,
Lord,' shall enter the kingdom of heaven, but he who does
the will of My Father in heaven. 22 "Many will say to Me
in that day, 'Lord, Lord, have we not prophesied in Your
name, cast out demons in Your name, and done many
wonders in Your name?' 23 "And then I will declare to
them, 'I never knew you; depart from Me, you who
practice lawlessness!' 24 " Therefore whoever hears
these sayings of Mine, and does them, I will liken him to a
wise man who built his house on the rock: 25 "and the
rain descended, the floods came, and the winds blew and
beat on that house; and it did not fall, for it was founded
on the rock. 26 "But everyone who hears these sayings of
Mine, and does not do them, will be like a foolish man
who built his house on the sand: 27 "and the rain
descended, the floods came, and the winds blew and beat
on that house; and it fell. And great was its fall."
John 3:3 Jesus answered and said to him, "Most
assuredly, I say to you, unless one is born again,
he cannot see the kingdom of God." 4 Nicodemus
said to Him, "How can a man be born when he is
old? Can he enter a second time into his mother's
womb and be born?" 5 Jesus answered, "Most
assuredly, I say to you, unless one is born of
water and the Spirit, he cannot enter the kingdom
of God.
Matthew 28:19 "Go therefore and make disciples
of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of
the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit,
Acts 2:38 Repent, and let every one of you be
baptized in the name of Jesus Christ for the
remission of sins;
1 Peter 3:21 There is also an antitype which now
saves us – baptism
Colossians 3:1 If then you were raised with
Christ, seek those things which are above, where
Christ is, sitting at the right hand of God. 2 Set
your mind on things above, not on things on the
earth. 3 For you died, and your life is hidden with
Christ in God.
Christians that are pillars will not have to
constantly be encouraged to:
• Assemble with saints.
• Dress Correctly.
• Give of their means.
• Study God’s Word.
• Put God first in their lives.
• Live a pure and holy life.
2. Pure and sincere worship of God
John 4:23 "But the hour is coming, and now is,
when the true worshipers will worship the Father
in spirit and truth; for the Father is seeking such
to worship Him. 24 "God is Spirit, and those who
worship Him must worship in spirit and truth."
Acts 2:42 And they continued steadfastly in the
apostles' doctrine and fellowship, in the breaking
of bread, and in prayers.
Matthew 15:7 "Hypocrites! Well did Isaiah
prophesy about you, saying: 8 'These people
draw near to Me with their mouth, And honor Me
with their lips, But their heart is far from Me. 9
And in vain they worship Me, Teaching as
doctrines the commandments of men.' "
3. Knowledge instead of ignorance.
2 Peter 3:17 You therefore, beloved, since you
know this beforehand, beware lest you also fall
from your own steadfastness, being led away
with the error of the wicked; 18 but grow in the
grace and knowledge of our Lord and Savior
Jesus Christ. To Him be the glory both now and
forever.
Hebrews 4:12 For the word of God is living and
powerful, and sharper than any two-edged sword,
piercing even to the division of soul and spirit,
and of joints and marrow, and is a discerner of
the thoughts and intents of the heart.
KJV 2 Timothy 2:15 Study to shew thyself
approved unto God, a workman that needeth not
to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth.
2 Timothy 1:13 Hold fast the pattern of sound
words which you have heard from me, in faith
and love which are in Christ Jesus.
2 Timothy 4:2 Preach the word! Be ready in
season and out of season. Convince, rebuke,
exhort, with all longsuffering and teaching. 3 For
the time will come when they will not endure
sound doctrine, but according to their own
desires, because they have itching ears, they will
heap up for themselves teachers; 4 and they will
turn their ears away from the truth, and be
turned aside to fables. 5 But you be watchful in
all things, endure afflictions, do the work of an
evangelist, fulfill your ministry.
1 John 4:1 Beloved, do not believe every spirit,
but test the spirits, whether they are of God;
because many false prophets have gone out into
the world.
Hosea 4:6 My people are destroyed for lack of
knowledge. Because you have rejected
knowledge, I also will reject you from being
priest for Me; Because you have forgotten the law
of your God, I also will forget your children.
SEVEN PILLARS OF THE CHURCH
1. A converted membership.
2. Pure and sincere worship to God.
3. Knowledge instead of ignorance.
4. Unity that Christ prayed for
John 17:20 " I do not pray for these alone, but
also for those who will believe in Me through
their word; 21 "that they all may be one, as You,
Father, are in Me, and I in You; that they also
may be one in Us, that the world may believe that
You sent Me.
Matthew 12:25 "Every kingdom divided against
itself is brought to desolation, and every city or
house divided against itself will not stand. 26 "If
Satan casts out Satan, he is divided against
himself. How then will his kingdom stand?
1 John 2:15 Do not love the world or the things in
the world. If anyone loves the world, the love of
the Father is not in him. 16 For all that is in the
world -- the lust of the flesh, the lust of the eyes,
and the pride of life -- is not of the Father but is
of the world. 17 And the world is passing away,
and the lust of it; but he who does the will of God
abides forever.
Philippians 2:5 Let this mind be in you which was
also in Christ Jesus, 6 who, being in the form of
God, did not consider it robbery to be equal with
God, 7 but made Himself of no reputation, taking
the form of a bondservant, and coming in the
likeness of men. 8 And being found in
appearance as a man, He humbled Himself and
became obedient to the point of death, even the
death of the cross.
2 John 1:9 Whoever transgresses and does not
abide in the doctrine of Christ does not have God.
He who abides in the doctrine of Christ has both
the Father and the Son.
1 Corinthians 1:10 Now I plead with you,
brethren, by the name of our Lord Jesus Christ,
that you all speak the same thing, and that there
be no divisions among you, but that you be
perfectly joined together in the same mind and in
the same judgment. 11 For it has been declared
to me concerning you, my brethren, by those of
Chloe's household, that there are contentions
among you. 12 Now I say this, that each of you
says, "I am of Paul," or "I am of Apollos," or "I am
of Cephas," or "I am of Christ." 13 Is Christ
divided? Was Paul crucified for you? Or were you
baptized in the name of Paul?
Philippians 2:1 Therefore if there is any
consolation in Christ, if any comfort of love, if any
fellowship of the Spirit, if any affection and
mercy, 2 fulfill my joy by being like-minded,
having the same love, being of one accord, of one
mind. 3 Let nothing be done through selfish
ambition or conceit, but in lowliness of mind let
each esteem others better than himself. 4 Let
each of you look out not only for his own
interests, but also for the interests of others.
Philippians 1:1 To all the saints in Christ Jesus
who are in Philippi, with the bishops and
deacons:
Acts 19:32 Some therefore cried one thing and
some another, for the assembly was confused,
and most of them did not know why they had
come together.
Psalm 133:1 Behold, how good and how pleasant
it is For brethren to dwell together in unity!
5. We must labor together
1 Corinthians 12:13 For by one Spirit we were all baptized
into one body -- whether Jews or Greeks, whether slaves
or free -- and have all been made to drink into one Spirit.
14 For in fact the body is not one member but many. 15 If
the foot should say, "Because I am not a hand, I am not of
the body," is it therefore not of the body? 16 And if the
ear should say, "Because I am not an eye, I am not of the
body," is it therefore not of the body? 17 If the whole
body were an eye, where would be the hearing? If the
whole were hearing, where would be the smelling? 18
But now God has set the members, each one of them, in
the body just as He pleased. 19 And if they were all one
member, where would the body be? 20 But now indeed
there are many members, yet one body.
21 And the eye cannot say to the hand, "I have no need of
you"; nor again the head to the feet, "I have no need of
you." 22 No, much rather, those members of the body
which seem to be weaker are necessary. 23 And those
members of the body which we think to be less honorable,
on these we bestow greater honor; and our unpresentable
parts have greater modesty, 24 but our presentable parts
have no need. But God composed the body, having given
greater honor to that part which lacks it, 25 that there
should be no schism in the body, but that the members
should have the same care for one another. 26 And if one
member suffers, all the members suffer with it; or if one
member is honored, all the members rejoice with it.
Romans 12:4 for as we have many members in
one body, but all the members do not have the
same function, 5 so we, being many, are one
body in Christ, and individually members of one
another.
1 Corinthians 15:58 Therefore, my beloved
brethren, be steadfast, immovable, always
abounding in the work of the Lord, knowing that
your labor is not in vain in the Lord.
6. Make heaven our goal
Philippians 3:14 I press toward the goal for the
prize of the upward call of God in Christ Jesus.
Hebrews 12:1Therefore we also, since we are
surrounded by so great a cloud of witnesses, let
us lay aside every weight, and the sin which so
easily ensnares us, and let us run with endurance
the race that is set before us, 2 looking unto
Jesus, the author and finisher of our faith
Revelation 3:1 "And to the angel of the church in Sardis
write, ' These things says He who has the seven Spirits of
God and the seven stars: "I know your works, that you
have a name that you are alive, but you are dead. 2 "Be
watchful, and strengthen the things which remain, that
are ready to die, for I have not found your works perfect
before God. 3 "Remember therefore how you have
received and heard; hold fast and repent. Therefore if you
will not watch, I will come upon you as a thief, and you
will not know what hour I will come upon you. 4 "You
have a few names even in Sardis who have not defiled
their garments; and they shall walk with Me in white, for
they are worthy. 5 "He who overcomes shall be clothed in
white garments, and I will not blot out his name from the
Book of Life; but I will confess his name before My Father
and before His angels. 6 "He who has an ear, let him hear
what the Spirit says to the churches." '
Matthew 6:33 "But seek first the kingdom of God
and His righteousness
2 Timothy 4:7 I have fought the good fight, I
have finished the race, I have kept the faith. 8
Finally, there is laid up for me the crown of
righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous
Judge, will give to me on that Day, and not to me
only but also to all who have loved His appearing.
7. There must be discipline
Philippians 3:16 let us walk by the same rule, let
us be of the same mind.
2 Thessalonians 3:6 But we command you,
brethren, in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ,
that you withdraw from every brother who walks
disorderly and not according to the tradition
which he received from us.
1 Timothy 1:18 This charge I commit to you, son
Timothy, according to the prophecies previously
made concerning you, that by them you may
wage the good warfare, 19 having faith and a
good conscience, which some having rejected,
concerning the faith have suffered shipwreck, 20
of whom are Hymenaeus and Alexander, whom I
delivered to Satan that they may learn not to
blaspheme.
Joshua 7:10 "Get up! Why do you lie thus on your
face? 11 "Israel has sinned, and they have also
transgressed My covenant which I commanded
them. For they have even taken some of the
accursed things, and have both stolen and
deceived; and they have also put it among their
own stuff. 12 "Therefore the children of Israel
could not stand before their enemies, but turned
their backs before their enemies, because they
have become doomed to destruction. Neither will
I be with you anymore, unless you destroy the
accursed from among you.
