UEMS MEETING 2012
VILNIUS, LITHUANIA
LITHUANIA
Lithuania is situated on the coast of the Baltic sea with a population of about 3,3 million inhabitants. Lithuania is the only Baltic country with nearly eight hundred years of statehood tradition, while its name was first mentioned one thousand and one year ago, in 1009. Wedged at the dividing line of Western and Eastern civilizations, Lithuania battled dramatically for its independence and survival. Once in the Middle Ages, Lithuania was the largest state in the entire Eastern Europe, where crafts and overseas trade prospered. In 1579, Vilnius University, an important scientific and education centre of the European scale, was opened. In 16th century, Lithuania adopted its First, Second and Third Statutes. Not only the Statutes were the backbone of the legislative system of the country, they had a major impact on legislation of other European states of the time. Despite losing its independence, Lithuania managed to retain its Third Statute in effect for as many as 250 years, which was instrumental in preservation of national and civic self awareness of the public. The Constitution of Lithuania Poland together with the French Constitution, both adopted in 1791, were the first constitutions in Europe.
Lithuania became the first independent Soviet republic in 1990, and now is a member of European Union, NATO and other international organizations.
About 85% of population is ethnic Lithuanians. Most of the inhabitants speaking other languages live in Vilnius, the capital of Lithuania. Distantly related to Sanskrit, a religious and literary language in India, Lithuanian is one of the world’s oldest surviving languages and has a special place in the study of languages.
Welcome to Vilnius!
Situated in the heart of Europe Vilnius, the capital of Lithuania, is a modern bustling city with population of 570 thousand people. Vilnius is the centre of knowledge: there are 8 universities and a number of research institutions there.
Most residents of Lithuania apart from the Lithuanian language can speak Russian, Polish, English, German or French.
Vilnius' medieval Old Town was designated a UNESCO World Heritage in 1994 and is the largest in Eastern Europe. Baroque architecture, modern sky-scrapers, friendly and reliable services, warm hospitality, a booming nightlife makes Vilnius an ideal place to combine work and pleasure.
“Vilnius is a miniature gem at the heart of Europe...”
Richard Green Sunday Times
