Technological Design Vs. Engineering Design ETP 2005 – Dan Houston This material is based upon work supported by the National Science Foundation under Grant No. 0402616. Any opinions, findings and conclusions or recommendations expressed in this material are those of the author(s) and do not necessarily reflect the view of the National Science Foundation (NSF). Technological Design Must be Iterative Iterative means that the design must be repetitive. Technological Design must allow for Multiple solutions. If there was only on correct way to design airplanes, we would still be using the Wright Brother’s design. Technological Design is an expression of creativity. Is engineering different from technological design? Engineering uses mathematics and science to make sure an idea will work. Techological Designs are often a product of trial and error. How are designs evaluated? Engineers often construct a model or prototype on which to test their ideas. Many Technological designs are refined over a long period of time. Engieering Design is not a career but a process used to design solutions to Technological Problems. Identify the problem Define the or refine the problem Gather Information Develop alternate solutions Select and refine the best solutions Build a Model or Prototype Evaluate, revise and refine the solution Communicate the solution
