What is CIC?
The Convention Industry Council (CIC)
is a federation of 33 national and
international associations representing
all aspects of the meeting, convention,
and exhibition industry. INCLUDING
SGMP.
The CIC owns and administers the
Certified Meeting Professional (CMP)

The CMP Process
1. Fill out the online application and submit to
CIC for approval

2. Receive approval notification from CIC
(within 6-8 weeks of application)
3. Pay exam fee to CIC
4. Schedule your exam date with Prometric
5. Sit for the CMP Exam (within one year of
receiving approval)

Make a copy of application, do a draft
Submit completed original application to
CIC along with required documentation
& application fee

Application Requirements
A minimum of three years work experience in
meeting management
Responsibility and accountability for the
successful completion of meetings
Industry internship consisting of a minimum
of 200 hours of work experience in last 5 yrs
OR
25 Continuing Education Hours in CIS

Eligibility
Application submission fee valid for one
calendar year.
Candidates have one calendar year
from the time they are approved to take
and pass the exam.
Calendar Year starts as soon as CIC
notifies applicants of their approval to
take the exam.

Professional (CGMP)
CGMP is owned and managed by SGMP.
Not an individual membership, but a
professional designation
CGMP Test is offered at least 2-3 times
annually - once at NEC and other times
as scheduled.
CGMP History
SGMP recognized a certification was needed
specifically designed for planners and suppliers
whose work is governed by the rules and
regulations of the federal government.
Developed in 2005 as joint program between SGMP
and the Graduate School at USDA.
2010 SGMP took the CGMP over from the Graduate
School and is now solely responsible for the
content, the classes, and the examination.
2013 CGMP Handbook was revised
