Tennis Grades 6-8th Brantley Warren Learning Objectives • Psychomotor: Students will be able to correctly perform the techniques necessary to perform successful forehand and backhand strokes. • Cognitive: Students will learn the rules and regulations to the game of Tennis and will be able to abide by them in actual game settings. • Affective: The students will utilize the principles of good sportsmanship in order to make the unit enjoyable for everyone. Rules and Regulations • Rule 1: Opponents stand on opposite sides of the court. • Rule 2: Server must stand behind baseline on serve. Even points are served from the deuce court and odd points are served from the advantage court. • Rule 3: One fault is given before the serve is lost and a point is granted to the opponent. • Rule 4: Score is kept as follows: Love – 15 – 30 – 40 – (Deuce) Must win by two points. • Rule 5: First to 6 games by two wins the set. First to two sets wins the match. • Rule 6: If a ball fails to make it over the net or lands outside of the playing court a point is awarded to the opponent. Rules and Regulations Cont. • Rule 7: A ball landing on any part of a line is considered in bounds. • Rule 8: Players rotate serve each game and rotate sides of the court when the sum of their games won is a multiple of 6. Forehand Stroke • Grip - Hold the throat of the racket lightly with your nondominate hand and shake the handle with your dominant hand so the “V” is positioned on top of the grip • Set Position - Stand with feet shoulder width apart and keep an open stance with chest facing the ball. • Backswing- Turn and bring the racket back at waist level so the handle of the racket is pointing in the direction you would like to hit the ball • Forward Swing- With your wrist firm, contact the ball well in front of your body by transferring your weight into the shot by stepping toward the net Forehand Stroke Cont. • Finish/Follow through - Weight on the front foot, body standing tall and square with slight flex in your non-dominant knee and racket position - wrist at eye level while the racket face is standing on edge. Backhand Stroke • Grip - Quarter turn with the dominant palm on the top of the racket handle. • Set Position - Weight is evenly distributed in an athletic stance. • Backswing - Turn with the non-dominant foot toward the “T,” keep racket at waist level and point the heel of the racket where you want the ball to travel • Forward Swing - Transfer your weight when the ball bounces and make contact in front of the body with a firm wrist Backhand Stroke Cont. • Finish/Follow through - Weight on the front foot at a 45degree angle to the net, body should be tall with lead knee slightly bent, wrist at eye level and racket 45 degrees beyond where you want the ball to travel.
