About the Big Island
Welcome to the Big Island
• The Big Island is the youngest volcanic island of the Hawaiian archipelago, with beautiful stretches of beaches and many, many isolated smaller beaches. Because of constant volcanic activity, you'll find white sands, green sands and black sands on Hawaii Island!
• There are billions of things, well millions, at least hundreds anyway… of things to do here. Like take a few days off and get married. • We chose Hawaii because it is half way between our two families.
• We chose the Big Island because it is our style –

Good to know Parking/shopping in town:
•There is a new pre-pay parking lot right in town at the corner of Ali ’i and Hualalai Street which can catch out the unsuspecting tourist •$7.00 after 17:00h in fine print •There is plenty of free parking in town off Ali ’i drive (go up the street past this lot, look on the left or right for free lots, or above the ABC Market at the big banyan tree in central town) •The KTA supermarkets are probably the best for any supplies •
Kona Farmers (International) Market
– found in town at the corner of Ali ’i Drive and Hualalai Street on Wednesday to Sunday. It is in the same neighborhood as the Kona Brew Pub. Locals never buy produce at the grocery store because you will get far superior quality produce at the markets for 1/3 the price. You can often score 5 or 6 papayas for a dollar! They also have local Kona coffee, nuts, jams, jewelry and crafty stuff, and wonderful flowers.
Tsunami alert:
•THE VERY, VERY LOUD SIREN OF THE TSUMANI ALERT IS TESTED THE FIRST DAY OF EVERY MONTH (CAN YOU SAY “RINGING IN THE EARS”?!) AND IT WILL GO FOR ~5 MINUTES THEN DROP OFF. IF YOU HEAR REPEATED SIRENS, TAKE IT SERIOUSLY •TV OR RADIO WILL INTERUPT EVERYTHING IF THE ALERT IS FOR REAL •A Tsunami is a VERY RARE EVENT (LAST ONE TO HIT THE BIG ISLAND WAS 1950 – that is until 11 March 2011 when the tsunami from the Japanese earthquake struck the Big Island, causing damage to Kailua-Kona, wiping out the historic Kona Village hotel, and sweeping many houses off their foundations) •THEY DO TRAVEL VERY FAST, SO IF IT’S THE REAL McCOY, HEAD UPHILL – follow evacuation routes – YOU CAN WALK FROM THE HAWAIAN OASIS PROPERTY TO SAFE GROUND •A TRAFFIC JAM ON ALI’I DRIVE SHOULD BE EXPECTED IN THE EVENT OF AN IMMEDIATE SHORELINE EVACUATION (DON ’T WORRY, WITH TODAY ’S WEATHER FORECASTING YOU SHOULD HAVE PLENTY OF WARNING TO GET EVERYONE AND EVERYTHING TO A SAFE AREA) •However, keep in mind that the Hawaiian Islands are prone to earthquakes, and if you are visiting and you feel a big quake, get yourself to high ground immediately (the Japan tsunami came ashore 20 minutes after the quake!). If you are at the Hawaiian Oasis, no worries!

•Hawaii County offers free mass transit via the “Hele On” (Let’s go) Bus – go anywhere on the island! •There are stops all around Hawaii Island, with service between Kona and Hilo offered Mon through Sat. •All buses are wheelchair accessible •The Keauhou Honu Express Shuttle that runs along Alii Drive is a good alternative to using a car to get around Kailua-Kona – $2 per person each ride. NOTE: the driver does not make change

Beaches along the Kona Coast
• One remarkable thing about The Big Island, unlike the other Hawaiian Islands, is that almost every beach on the Big Island has remained free of mega-resorts and condo complexes.
• You can click on this link for a

. • There are great beaches and snorkeling within a 10 to 20 minute drive of our accommodation – the
most distant
beach on the northern tip of the Big Island is one hour drive.
• • The Hawaiian Oasis accommodation is located near “shortcut routes ” that make a drive to the north or south of the island efficient. The closest beaches are at the
Honokohau Harbor, The Energy Lab
(llittle known place that is great for small children and has sheltered inlets for when the ocean is kicking up)
, Kikaua Point Beach , Kekaha Kai State Beach , and Kua Bay
. Except for Kua Bay, these are all sheltered beaches when the surf is high. • The
big state beaches
are north in the Waikoloa district, and from the Oasis you're looking at a 30 minute or so drive. Along the way are some other really great snorkeling and swimming beaches, some of which are remote, empty of people, and worth the effort (at
Makalewena
for instance, without question the most beautiful beach on the Big Island, you ’ll be rewarded with a pristine beach that rivals any in the world).

(Anaeho ’omalu Bay) is well sheltered, a good swim, and about 8-10 minutes closer than
Hapuna State Beach
(Hapuna is 32 miles from our accommodation, and was noted by Conde Naste magazine a few years ago as the “best beach in North America ”).

You can also get picked up at the Kona airport in a helicopter, then dropped off to go through the forest and mountains on Hummers to the zipline areas. Spectacular views, rainforests, waterfalls, and old trees you have to see to believe.

•If you plan to go to
Volcanoes National Park
, because of the recent active lava flows, contact the Park Rangers for up to the minute info about where to go and what road closures there may be. •Get an early start, don’t dawdle too much on the way, bring warm clothes, be at the lava viewing area at sunset to see the lava action, and plan for a long drive home (the park is 30 miles southwest of Hilo, about 1½ to 3 hours to Kona – the park is big!). •Bring tennis shoes, flashlight and lots of water – especially if you ’ll be walking out to the lava flows at night. Binoculars can really add to the experience. •The most active volcano in the world is on the Big Island and been continuously erupting for 20 years. •Helicopter touring can be a fantastic experience. •If you have the time and the interest, you might want to spend the night up there. Refer to the “Big Island Revealed ” book for lodging and details about Volcano National Park. There are also nice B&Bs up there.
Volcano House:
•The Volcano House hotel overlooking Halemaumau Crater has been operating since it was a grass shack in 1846. Even Mark Twain once stayed here on his visit to Hawaii. The hotel has recently undergone renovations and is open under new management.

•Watch the landscape change before your very eyes at Hawaii Volcanoes National Park. Located 30 miles southwest of Hilo, this is the home of Kilauea volcano, one of the most active volcanoes on earth. •Kilauea is sometimes called "the world's only drive-in volcano." This prolific volcano currently produces 250,000-650,000 cubic yards of lava per day, enough to resurface a 20-mile-long, two-lane road daily. Crater Rim Drive
of 10 miles that circles Kilauea Caldera. Driving around this loop will take you to the park's main attractions – the Kilauea overlook, Jaggar Museum, Halemaumau Crater, Devastation Trail, Kilauea Iki Crater overlook and Thurston Lava Tube.

Halemaumau Crater
– steam vents plume from this massive crater, known as the home of Pele, the volcano goddess. In 1967, this crater was filled with a lake of lava that eventually drained away. Great respect should be paid at this sacred site.
•Puu Oo Vent – currently Kilauea's lava activity isn't centered in its caldera (the large depression at the top of the volcano) but at the Puu Oo vent in the East Rift Zone. Puu Oo's lava flood underground tubes that empty dramatically into the sea. You can watch this spectacle at the end of Chain of Craters Road or get a closer look from the new Kalapana viewing site outside the park.
•Chain of Craters Road – Ranger station is open daily: between 10:00 and 21:00. Veering south of Crater Rim Drive is Chain of Craters Road. This 3,700-foot drive eventually ends where a lava flow has literally overtaken the road.

Sea Strike – Deep sea fishing
• Kona has world class fishing. • With the recent economic troubles a lot of the fishermen are hungry, and word on the street is you can go down to the harbor and wheel and deal with these guys for a great price. • Make sure you arrange to keep some of the fish you catch! Hawaiian Oasis had a guest do exactly this, it was very reasonably priced and they ran into a school of mahi-mahi and landed 75 fish!

The southernmost point of the USA
•Travel to the southern cliffs of Hawaii Island in the Kau region and gaze out at the endless Pacific Ocean. Can you believe there ’s nothing but deep-blue ocean between the spot you ’re standing on and Antarctica? That’s because you're at Ka Lae, also known as South Point or simply “The Point,” the southern most point in the United States.
•It is believed that the first Polynesians to arrive in the Hawaiian Islands disembarked here at Ka Lae somewhere between 400 and 800 A.D. •The offshore currents and winds are notoriously powerful here and swimming is not advised.
•The actual point is a short walk in front of the black-and white light beacon, where there are no cliffs.
•To get to this rocky shoreline you need to take the narrow South Point Road 12-miles through open ranch lands lined with white windmills. There is a small heiau (sacred place of worship) near Ka Lae so visitors should treat the area with great respect.

Description Also caleld Place of Refuge – historical area, great snorkel, dolphins in the bay, follow the seawall on your right to find big eels at a depth of 10-15 feet (they won ’t bother you, just don ’t stick your fingers into any rocks). Location Some of the best snorkeling and swimming, and several places to rent kayaks.
One of the most famous black sand beaches in Hawaii, you may also discover large honu (Hawaiian Green Sea turtles, protected so do not touch them please), swimming isn't ideal, picnic area, restrooms.
One of the most romantic beaches on the West side of the island. Local Hawaiians use this beach on weekends, so please respect their space and visit only on weekdays. Black sand crescent beach.
Little know, even by locals. You won ’t see signs for it, but it’s easy to find. Walk over the lava trail, head to the right and look for a good spot to get in. The small coves are wonderful snorkel and dipping spots.
Reliably safe even when the surf is big and you ’ll always see turtles here. This is a marine preserve, and like swimming in an aquarium. Good snorkeling for timid swimmers or first-time snorkelers, but enough to see that everyone will have a good time. Surf lessons, snack bar and bathroom/shower facilities.
Kua Bay road is just opposite the road (signed) to the Veteran ’s Cemetery (beach turn-off is NOT marked). Always gets surf.
Reliably fine regardless of surf conditions, and is also a good dive and snorkel spot. Bonus – next door at the Harbor restaurant is the coldest (and cheapest) beer in town, a “schooner”! Also, there’s a great fish shop at the right side of the Harbor.. Popular boogie boarding and a friendly local ’s beach. Depending on the surf patterns the sand can disappear overnight (usually after a big storm), only to magically return with a change of wave pattern. Soft sand, great snorkeling off the right side in front of Magic Sands Condos.
Small, quiet, green-grass and park bench kind of park that also has a small sandy beach with ocean access (perfect for little ones), Great place to find beach glass and seashells. Good snorkeling here, and if you swim around the reef to the north, you ’re in “turtle cove” and the “backyard” of Hale Honu.
The beaches up in this area (Kohala) are big expanses of sandy beaches with good swimming and boogie boarding. Hapuna was named Conde Naste ’s “Best Beach in America ” in 2004! There are always people here, but it never feels crowded.
The shore along the desert Northern end of the big island is sheltered and pristine. Great snorkeling. Well reputed for humpbacks breeching and pectoral slapping.
Between Hawaii Volcanoes National Park and the small town of Naalehu .About 45 minutes south to Miloli Ali ’i Drive. Go to the very end (southern tip) of Ali ’i Drive, after Keauhou shopping center and King Kam III road. At mile 5.5 on Ali ’i Drive 15 miles north of Kailua-Kona Not on any maps, between Kawaihae and Hawi take the dirt road off the highway, then walk ’I.
At the end of the road leading to the Harbor. Just head off down to the left over the lava. at mile 4.5 on Ali ’i Drive (between our Hale Honu and Keauhou-Kona Surf and Racquet homes) North of Kona town 30-45 minutes, but worth the drive!

= Jamison ’s by the Sea, next to Magic Sands Beach Description The brewery has wonderful pizza, salads, sandwiches, and of course, lots of micro-brewed beer (the bottled version of their beers is actually brewed in California, and is inferior to what is on tap here). The food is great, and the atmosphere is wonderful too. Outdoor garden seating, and free live music every Sunday starting at 17:00. With some regret, it has been discovered, and the days of walking right in and sitting down at peak hours are over. But you can enjoy a cold one while waiting! The food here is amazing and very reasonably priced. The chef is from New Zealand, and the unique dishes are intensely flavorful, some spicy, with good vegetarian choices…think Asia/Indian/Thai food. The fried banana won ton desert is unbelievable, the combo plates give you wonderful value, and beef sate is not to be missed. A nice atmosphere and does a great take-out. Their Tom Ka Gai (chicken coconut soup) is the best ever. Location one block mauka (toward the mountains) from the north end of Kona town. You won ’t see it from the road – adjacent to a small shopping center and can be accessed from there (the back way), or through an industrial area (the front way). The front way…take Kuakini Rd away from town (North). Turn right on Kaiwi St, then right on Pawai.
