Think of a time where people from different
cultures or races have misjudged or
misunderstood one another. Perhaps
you have personally experienced such a
misunderstanding. Describe the
incident(s) and explain what you think
happened and why.

Make a “Hawaii and Culture” section in your Reading
Log. Write down interesting thoughts during your
discussion that you could share or refer to later.
Remember that everyone has a voice and everyone’s
opinions are respected.
• What makes Hawaii unique in terms of
mixing cultures?
• Do you think Hawaii is open to mixing
cultures, or are there still some cultural
problems you see? Be specific.
• What do you think about the movement
of the Reinstated Hawaiian Government

Last thing…then we’ll start reading.
• On Page 148, read “Build Background”
section.
• When you’ve finished reading it, turn to
your elbow partner and summarize what
it talks about.
“While Reading Notes”
• While you read, you will stop at the
bottom of each page to write a 1-2
sentence summary of what happened
on that page.
• You will also make a character chart.
When you get to the bottom of each
page, list the characters and write what
you know or think about them. Feel free
to give your opinion about how they are
acting as well as describing them.
Post reading: Make a group of 3
• One person is the recorder. Answer on
filler paper. (Write your names!)
• On page 156, answer the “Think
Critically” questions 2-5.
• Discuss them with your group and write
down the different answers you and
your group members had.
• (Don’t forget to support your opinions
with specific details from the story!)
