The Relationship between the Palaces and the Buddhist Temples in Rattanakosin Period: Study on Wat Rajadhivas Vihara The Grand Palace of Kingdom of Thailand Wat Prasrirattana Sasadaram or Temple of Emerald Buddha within the Grand Palace Associate Professor Jaruphan Supprung Dean of the Faculty of Fine and Applied Arts Suan Sunandha Rajabhat University Crisis of values & ethical behaviors in Thailand today Mass media & flow Foreign culture through Information technology Social institutions (families, religions & schools) neglect their duties Thai people (especially youths & children) decline of virtuousness, morality, ethics & potential development no filtering & selection : good or not Reasons for conducting this research The knowledge gained from this systematic research displayed on mass media and information technology, will be beneficial to Thai people’s lifelong learning Thais can also take pride of Thai elegant works of art created by the “Palaces” (Chakri Kings & the Royalty) in the royal Buddhist temples and Wat Rajadhivas Vihara Thais are being loyal to the “Palaces” A suitable case study of Wat Rajadhivas Vihara It is located on the east Bank of the Chao Phraya River The former name of this very old Buddhist temple was Wat Samorai King Rama IV renamed it to “Wat Rajadhivas Vihara” because This temple was monk residence of his father-King Rama II, his younger uncle-Maha Senanurak the front palace and himself This royal Buddhist temple was always restored under the royal patronage of the “Palaces” from the reign of King Rama I to the present reign of King Rama IX Research Objectives 1 2 To study the relationship between the “Palaces” and the Buddhist Temples in Rattanakosin Period To study the relationship between the “Palaces” and Wat Rajadhivas Vihara in Rattanakosin Period Research Methodology : All steps are made by the researcher Documentary studies In National Library & National Archive Data collection Field studies at Wat Rajadhivas Vihara Qualitative data analysis and interpretation Without variable control Presentation of the analysis results and research results By descriptive writing with pictures Research Results 9 Kings of Chari Dynasty Wat Prasrirattana Sasadaram The relationship between the “Palaces” and the Buddhist temples in Rattanakosin Period Rattanakosin Period The first monarch of Chakri Dynasty He founded the new capital : Rattanakosin His wishes - patronized Buddhism - protected the Kingdom - looked after people and nobilities He realized the importance of the Palaces and the Buddhist temples : cannot be separated and need to be dependable The importance of the Buddhist temples : - community halls - schools - centers of Art works - centers of Buddhist thought King Buddha Yodfa Chulaloke - places of everybody’s participation the Great or King Rama I - monks were the community leaders (6 April 1782-7 September 1809) King Rama I’ s Buddhist activities Sorted out the scriptures Regulated the ecclesiastical laws Built/restored many Buddhist temples The “Palaces” (Chakri Kings and the Royalty) began the relationship with the Buddhist temples These activities were followed respectively by the later kings of Chakri Dynasty The relationship in Rattanakosin Period The “Palaces” have close relationship with the Buddhist temples that were established or were regarded by the Kings as the royal temples about 290 royal temples on 2008 A.D.
