I do namaskarams to Lord rAmA, who was the best amongst
the great kings of the family of Raghu, who wields his great
bow and arrows, who has a complexion and softness like that
of a blue lotus, and on whose left side sits his dear consort,
Godess sItA.

Leader of the city of Ayodhya;
Leader of the city of Mithila;
Jewel of the Raghu clan;
Jewel of the family of vidEha.

nimeenAm kula deepikAm
sUrya vamsha samud bhootAm,
sOma vamsha samud bhavAm || 2
The light of the Raghu clan;
The light of the Nimi clan;
Born into the solar dynasty;
Born into the lunar dynasty.

putreem janaka bhUpatE
vasishTAnu matAcAram
satAnanda matAnugam || 3
Son of (King) Dasharatha;
Daughter of King Janaka;
One who followed Sage Vasishta’s advice;
One who obeyed the wishes of Sage
SatAnanda.

kausalyA garbha sambhUtam
vEdI garbhOditam swayam
puNDareeka vishAlAksham
sphurad indeevarEkshanam || 4
Born of the womb of Kausalya,
Arisen from the Yagna floor herself,
One who has lotus-like large eyes,
One who has eyes like fully open blue lotuses.

candra bhimbho upamAnanam
matta mAtanga gamanam
matta hamsa vadhoo gatim || 5
One who can be likened to a lotus flower opened
by the rays of the moon
One who can be compared to the countenance of
the Moon
One who walks like a great, lively elephant
One whose gait is like that of a lively swan.
