details lime scaling:
2 – 3 – 4 Port Valve
2-Port
Principle
Comments
Regulates the primary flow
through the HE which gives a
variable flow rate
 Suitable for District Heating
 2 Port valve connected to a controller
ensures right flowrate, thus constant
water temperature on secondary side
up to 25 bar & 130 °C
3-Port
Regulates the primary
temperature in the HE and
gives a constant flow rate
up to 10 bar & 110°C
4 Port
Regulates the primary
temperature in the HE and
gives a constant flow rate
 Connected to a local boiler or
Primary tank on site
 No risk of thermal shock
 Limited lime scaling
 Energy efficient as only required
energy is used
 Necessary if HE is located away
from local boiler or Primary tank
to avoid « cold water train »
 No need of mixing bottle
up to 6 bar & 110°C

removes the deposit on all heat transfer surfaces
in the heat exchanger.
A chemical agent is circulated in the HE to
remove the scaling deposit.

Result of scaling of an AquaFlow with Alfa Nova heat
exchanger after 1,5 year of use in a region with medium
water hardness (35°TH = 20dH):

= Circulation Pump to maintain a minimum flow rate through the entire network
= Charging Pump on secondary side is used to store hot water in the storage vessel.
The stored hot water is only used for peak period when the Domestic Hot Water (DHW) demand is
higher than the energy supply. If storage vessel is emptied before the end of the peak period, DHW
will be provided at a nominal flow rate corresponding to the energy input on site.

Temperature Alarm
High Alarm:
 the Tap Water temperature at the outlet of the heat exchanger
exceeds 10% the set point temperature; the power supply to the
primary circuit pump is cut
 when the temperature has decreased below the high temperature
threshold value (1 °C), the system can be re-activated either
manually or automatically
Low Alarm:
 the Tap Water temperature at the outlet of the heat exchanger
undershoots 12°C the set point temperature
 early warning for possible operating disturbances
© Alfa Laval
Slide 41
www.alfalaval.com
Eco Function
 If temperature does not decrease for a given period and the
control valve is closed, the Primary pump will stop.
 Primary pump re-starts when temperature falls below set point
and the control valve opens
 The charging and recycling pumps (if existing) are still running
 Disengageable function
© Alfa Laval
Slide 42
www.alfalaval.com
Booster Function *
 If tap water temperature decreases rapidly both primary pumps are
activated
 Provides more primary flow rate thus more output to compensate
the sudden temperature drop on the secondary side
 The 2nd Primary pump head is switched off once the set point value
is reached again
 Disengageable function
* available when twin-head primary pumps are fitted
© Alfa Laval
www.alfalaval.com
Thermal Treatment Function
 Temperature is raised to 70°C to eridicate legionella
bacterie in the complete network
 Treatment at a preset day and time (in general once a
week at night when little demand)
 Adjustable duration (in general 2 hours)
 Disengageable function

more details:
www.alfalaval.com
The S4 sensor checks the temperature of the water entering into SolarFlow. This temperature
is compared to the temperature of the S5 sensor.
Than 2 possibilities occur:
1) if S5 > S4  SolarFlow is engaged: heat will be transferred in the Heat Exchanger.
The S sensor checks the secondary outlet temperature and adjusts the control valve accordingly.
2) if S5 < S4  SolarFlow is on standby: the control valve is closed, the Primary Pump is switched off.
Water flows through the Heat Exchanger without heat transfert and the DHW has to be heated up by
another source of energy.
SolarFlow has always to be combined with a conventional Tap Water System. Ask your local Alfa Laval sales office for a
detailed product brochure.

About Legionella
48 different Legionella species are known. They occur in low numbers in natural
environments such as rivers, lakes and reservoirs where they can survive
temperatures as low as 60C and as high as 500 C. Generally speaking they grow
best at temperatures between 20 to 450 C and are at their most virulent at 370 C.
The problem is that the bacteria can migrate into and thrive in man-made water
systems. Enclosed, warm storage vessels, pipe-work with lots of blind spots and
under-utilised water systems containing stagnant water provide an ideal
environment in which bacteria can flourish.
Legionella in Domestic Hot Water (DHW) Systems
Domestic as used here applies to all non-process water used for showers, hot
water, eating etc. Legionnaires’ disease may be contracted from any of these
sources by inhaling aerosol droplets. Hot and cold water systems in buildings are
the source of most reported cases of Legionnaires’ disease.
Health & Safety obligations
Any person, either individually or as an officer of a company or group, that owns or
operates water systems on any premises, is legally responsible for the control of
Legionella and its attendant risks.
Alfa Laval designed AQUAPROTECT to avoid any risk of Legionella in your
premises.

Key requirements
Key requirements for supplying domestic hot water:
•
•
•
•
•
•

Cost-efficient
low up-front investment, operating and maintance costs
Energy-efficient
low energy consumption
Space-efficient
using minimal floor and room space
Installation-efficient
simple and quick to install, test and start up
Service-efficient
easy to clean and maintain; long maintenance intervals with
short service shut-downs
•
Comfortable
no waiting for hot water and appropriate temperature levels,
no risk of scaling at the tap
•
•
Dependable
hot water available at the right moment
Sufficient
enough hot water even during peak-consumption hours

Slide 106
www.alfalaval.com
District or Local Heating
•
District Heating
The heat from the high-pressure and high-temperature main network
flows via the 2 port valve, which regulates the primary flow through the
heat exchanger of the tap water systems and gives a variable flow rate.
Up to 25 bar & 130°C
•
Local Heating
The heat from the local boiler flows via the primary pump to the 3 or 4
port valve, which regulates the available primary temperature in the
heat exchanger and gives a constant flow rate.
Up to 10 bar & 110°C
© Alfa Laval
Slide 107
www.alfalaval.com
Instantaneous or Semi-instantaneous

Instantaneous
No connection to a storage tank; the
incoming primary heat flow heats the
secondary flow of cold water, which is
then distributed directly to the taps.
To cope with peak periods, a highercapacity of primary flow is required,
which implies a larger heat exchanger,
thus a higher boiler capacity or larger
district heating pipes.

Semi-Instantaneous
With charging pump(s) for connection to a
storage tank; the heat exchanger is
principally used to charge the tank. The
tank ensures high hot water capacity in
peak periods without having a large heat
exchanger. The primary flow can be
supplied through smaller local boilers or
district heating pipes.

example:
How to dimension

Drain place
Standard consumption
Instantaneous hot water system
The most precise way is to conduct a drain
analysis. The total sum of all water outlets is
used to establish the total heat load:
 Semi-Instantaneous hot water system
Sink
6 l/min.
ConventionalShower
12 l/min.
Shower with timer
7,2 l/min.
Bath tub
18 l/min.
Tank size
The heat load will depend on additional
variables, such as the size of the tank, the
time needed to heat the tank and the
circulation heat losses.
A drain analysis is still useful and some rules
of thumb in that context:
50 l/flat (up to 30 flats)
20 – 50 l/flat (30 – 100 flats)
20 l/flat (more than 100 flats)
Time to heat tank
1 – 8 hours (depending on size
and available power on site)
Circulation heat
losses
0.8 – 0.15 kW/flat or
100 l/stairwell
(Local conditions may influence the demand factors)
