Solution providers
• Provide applications software, middleware, host solutions
• Traditional software vendors are in a better position
than operators to control value chain since they have
enterprise expertise.
• But need to partner with wireless specialists.
• So wireless start-up software vendors are competing
with:
Device & equipment manufacturers
• Enterprise device types but will be based around palmtop
and smartphone form factors. Opportunities for vertical
market specific devices, but not widespread usage.
• Device operating system: Palm vs. Symbian vs. Microsoft
2001 & 2002: Microsoft’s ubiquity in exisiting enterprise
IT systems prevails over Palm.
Symbian will gain market share from 2002 when
applications are fully developed for enterprise.
• Opportunities for gateway vendors to become solution
providers.
So...
• Technology is available now for majority of services,
GPRS will enable 90% of enterprise requirements.
• Main restraints are enterprise apprehension and lack of
turnkey solutions.
• However, enterprise apprehension is is largely based on
misconceptions over technology and ROI. Therefore
operators and vendors with the strongest marketing will
succeed.
• Successful vendors will be those with the strongest
partnerships - not necessarily big is best.
