SOIS Area Report
Wireless WG
Goals for the spring meeting
• Complete the discussions and agree on the second recommended practice of the
low data-rate wireless communications Magenta book
• Further define the technical architecture and the cooperation and administrative
framework of the shared test bench for smart sensors
Working Group Status
• RFID-Based Inventory Management Systems Magenta Book submitted to editing
review, to be followed by first Agency review. The WG to evaluate the need to
define the RFID encoding (tag content), which requires additional expertise
(currently under investigation).
• Low data-rate wireless communications for spacecraft monitoring and control
Magenta book to be completed (two use-cases) during the summer and
submitted to CCSDS before the Fall meeting
• Discussions took place about organizing a workshop on wireless technologies to
be held in the North America in 2012
• The WWG agreed in nominating Jean-François Dufour (ESA/ESTEC) as group
chairman in replacement of Patrick Plancke (ESA/ESTEC) now retired.

Wireless WG “Low data-rate wireless communications for spacecraft
monitoring and control” (This magenta books identifies a number of use
cases for the application of wireless technology, ranging from AIT to onboard
sensor networks and recommends commercial wireless standards)
WG status
• Consensus achieved on all open issues
• Contention-based access when the spectrum environment is controlled, low

overhead needed and l
- IEEE 802.15.4
Scheduled-access for use when deterministic behaviours and higher interference
tolerance is needed

Book is to be completed and reviewed
at SOIS-level before the end of the
summer prior to submission for CESG
review

Wireless WG Low data-rate wireless communications for spacecraft
monitoring and control (cont)
•
To assist in the joint evaluation of potential technology and commercial
devices, the group continued the work on the definition/exploration of a
“Smart Sensor Inter-Agency Reference Testbench (SSIART)”
•
This is an effort to coordinate the work in wireless networking projects of
each agency and to leverage on that work to simplify the overall testing
efforts and technically prepare future updates (e.g. new use-cases) of the
MB
•
Intended as a controlled test environment with associated test procedures
for assessment of wireless technologies and engineering metrics for
wireless spacecraft communications, including common hardware and
software
•
Need to investigate proper channels and procedures for interagency
(ESA/NASA/CSSAR/CSA) collaboration (e.g. potentially ITAR issues)
