Introduction
•
“Starlet Class”: Spanning across the high mountainous terrains and deep valleys in southwestern Sichuan, this Yi Autonomous
Prefecture area is often plagued by natural disasters such as torrential rain, mud and rock slides, snow storms etc. Due to the
many natural barriers surrounding it, it is isolated from news and communications. As recent as 1956, it was still a society with
slavery which practiced various primitive customs and evil rituals. They were leading a primitive farming and slavery lifestyle.
The drastic changes China underwent in the sixties had little bearing on these Yi natives. Here, due to drug addictions, AIDS,
poor hygiene and poverty etc., there are an unusually high number of orphans. Most are being cared for by their elderly and frail
grandparents whose livelihoods rely on skimpy pieces of farmland. Educations for the children are beyond their means. Thus,
the children suffer from a life of illiteracy. Unable to speak and read Chinese, what can they do when they grow up? Us living in
a society with plentiful and excessive resources, can we stand by and not lend a helping hand?

In Liangshan, with the assistance of the local education and related departments, Fu Hui went to the far off mountain areas to
verify the little orphans’ identities and accept them into the Starlet Classes.

The Misfortunes in the Depth of Liangshan
• Since 2006, Fu Hui has been providing educational subsidies to students in the Liangshan Yi Autonomous Prefecture of Butou,
Zhaojue, Jinyang, Meigu etc. These are extremely impoverished areas. Our targets are students from 7 to 10 years of age. We
support them all the way through junior high. For those with good marks, we would help them through senior high or even
through university.
• By September 2010, Fu Hui has assisted 1,700 orphans and girls and has opened 30 Starlet classes. We provide comprehensive
subsidies including room and board while they are in school and hire nannies to look after them.
• These children are scattered throughout the treacherous mountainous areas 2000 meters above sea level. 90% of the Yi
population live in the mountains and do not speak Chinese and never went to school. They help their grandparents work in the
farm and waste away their precious childhood. In Liangshan, even natural parents would find it difficult to send their children to
school let alone these orphans. For them, a proper education is the only hope for the future.
• We sponsor Starlet Classes by working in earnest with the school and the education department. Utilizing the existing
dormitories, Fu Hui provide resources, nannies and medical insurance etc. to enable the children to study without any worries.
We have invited experts to volunteer their time to conduct training for the teachers in order to upgrade the qualities of teaching
and child care. Volunteers conduct scheduled visits to check to ensure that our donations are applied on the specified needs.
Fu Hui is not content with just giving away money; we strive to raise the combined qualities of our
children’s learning and growth so that our donations will go even further.

Introduction
• We ventured into Liangshan with genuine sincerity to apply our most compassionate and fearless love to ignite a glimmer of
hope in the children!
• We promote the five principles for a balanced education: Morality, Intelligence, Health, Community and Inner Beauty. We want
to instill a sense of independence and mutual love and support in them.
Procedure
Admission
• Liangshang Yi Autonomous Prefecture education department is our
staunch supporter. They provide dormitories, teachers, administrative
and various human resources. Experts from the Disease Prevention
Centre were invited to train the teachers. Fu Hui meets with the
officials from the Education Department several times a year to plan,
assess progress and solve problems.

Home Visits
• Liangshang Yi Autonomous Prefecture education department is our staunch
supporter. They provide dormitories, teachers, administrative and various human
resources. Experts from the Disease Prevention Centre were invited to train the
teachers. Fu Hui meets with the officials from the Education Department several
times a year to plan, assess progress and solve problems.

Commencing Classes
• Most of the Starlets’ homes are in the far off mountains. The school
provides dormitory for them to live at the school. Fu Hui hire nannies
to care for them after class and subsidize their meals, uniforms,
clothing and supplies, medical insurance etc. to ensure they can live in
an environment conducive to learning.
School Life
• Emotionally, these children rely heavily on their teachers and the
nannies. “Teaching with Compassion” is our foremost criterion. From
the natural and glorious smiles on their faces and the spirit they display in
class and the confidence they exerted in performances, we are most
grateful of the love and patience the teachers have given the children.
• We have outlined rather high standards for study and discipline,
emphasizing both Chinese and Yi dialects. As the needs arise, televisions
were installed to broadcast educational programs via satellite
transmissions. Bathrooms are equipped with solar heating systems. We
also collect used cameras and computers for specified classes to keep
abreast with modern technology.
• We cannot provide fish to the Starlets everyday, but by teaching them
how to fish, they can gain a skill for life.

Training
• The nannies are responsible for teaching the Starlets tidiness
and discipline. They have recruited the military police to
demonstrate tips on folding blankets. Awards are given to
teachers and nannies demonstrating compassion and hard
work.
University of Hong Kong Children Psychological Assessment Training Course.
• Professors Cecilia Chan and Grace Bao from The University of Hong
Kong, Faculty of Social Science; Professor Fu-Min Fan from Beijing
Tsinghua University, Faculty of Psychology; and Professor Yong-Hua
Zhang from Xichang College, Faculty of Social Science, volunteered
their services by conducting “Ambassador of Love” training programs in
2007 and 2009. The trainees were school principals, teachers and nannies
from the Starlet classes. Regardless of their job rankings and through
small group activities, group games and discussions, participants came
together to learn about child psychology and education; and acquire skills
to help alleviate the psychological burden of starlets in losing their
parents. The professors also held a Love Torch Youth Training Camp to
improve on home visit skills and to promote the spirit of team work.

Introduction
• In the remote mountainous areas, boys are heavily favored over girls who are striped of their rights to go to school and forced to
wed at an early age.
• Renowned American charitable educator writes — have helped tens of thousands of girls in the mountainous areas of Pakistan
and Afghanistan got an education. In one of her best sellers, she expressed our benevolent intention of operating all girls’ classes
in Liangshan:
•
“When you educate a girl, you are actually educating a community”. What this
sentence implies is that once girls have received an education, they will apply what
they have learned upon returning to their respective villages: thus improving the
village’s hygiene standard, teach the difference of what’s right and wrong, good and
bad, raise the ability to judge and pass the wisdom and knowledge down from
generations to generations.”

• Fu Hui started a junior high all girls class in Butuo, in the hope that this will
promote “Let the Girls go to School”, to learn, become civilized females and
change their destinies.
Commencing Classes
• The 2009 All Girls’ Class Opening Ceremony. We hope that all students will graduate
and none will drop out.
