What are Managed Lanes

• TxDOT defines a managed lane facility as one that increases freeway efficiency by packaging various operational and design actions.

• Generally a “freeway within a freeway” where a set of lanes within the freeway cross section is physically separated from general purpose lanes

What are they?

• Physically Separated Toll lanes with Controlled Points of Access • Utilize Fixed, Variable or Traffic Responsive Tolls to Manage Demand • Also Known as Value Priced Lanes

Objectives

• Relieve Congestion • Optimize Use of Capacity • Improve Operating Speeds • Provide Incentive for Modal Shift • Offer a Reliable Alternative

HOT lanes are limited-access, normally barrier separated highway lanes that provide free or reduced cost access to qualifying HOVs, and sell additional capacity to other vehicles which do not meet passenger occupancy requirements.

Operating with 10 years (green)

• 95 Express Phase 1, 2, & 3 • I-595 • I-75 • SR 826 • SR 836 • HEFT (SR 836 to Caribbean)

PD&E (light blue)

• 95 Express Phase 3 • SR 826 (SR 924 to I-95) • US 1

Phase 1&2

• District 6 tentatively scheduled to operate both Phase 1 & 2 until the completion of Phase 3

Phase 3

• Griffin Road to Glades Road (Tentative) • Currently in PD&E

Phase 4

• Planned to extend through Palm Beach County

Before After -

• Will provide 3 reversible express lanes within the median • Eastbound in the AM peak period • Westbound in the PM peak period • Access from west of 136 Ave, east of SR 7 and direct connect from Florida’s Turnpike • Will utilize a variable tolling strategy • Operated and maintained by 595 Express

• 4-lane tolled managed lanes facility in the I-75 median • Express lanes direct connections to I-595, Florida’s Turnpike (HEFT), and the Palmetto Expressway • Intermediate express lanes ingress/egress locations at Royal Palm Blvd., Griffin Rd., Sheridan St., Miramar Pkwy., Miami Gardens Dr. and NW 154th St.

Example: Signing and tolls for to a motorist traveling from SR 836 to I-595 via SR 826 and I-75 South of MGD: Prior to entry: Total Tolls: $9.00 (SR 836 to MGD) + $7.00 (MGD to I-595) = $16.00
