Annwyl Riant / Gwarcheidwad,
Bwriad y llyfryn hwn yw cyflwyno i'ch sylw fraslun o drefniadaeth, polisïau a gweithgareddau’r ysgol. Mae’r rhan
fwyaf o'r cynnwys wedi ei osod yn ôl trefn yr Wyddor, gyda'r rhifau gyferbyn a'r penawdau yn gyfatebol i'r rhifau yn
y fersiwn Saesneg. Gall y wybodaeth eang sydd yn y llyfryn godi ambell gwestiwn, felly, buaswn yn falch petaech
yn cysylltu yn uniongyrchol â mi os ydych am eglurhad pellach.

Dear Parent / Guardian
The purpose of this handbook is to present parents with an outline of the school's organisation, policies and
activities. Most of the content has been arranged in alphabetical order, (numbers adjacent to the headings refer to
the corresponding numbers in the Welsh version). It is possible that the comprehensive information within it will
raise questions, therefore, please contact me directly should you require further explanations.
Even though the information in the handbook is correct at the time of publication, it should not be assumed that
there will be no change affecting the relevant arrangements before the start of or during the school year or in
relation to subsequent years.
Every pupil who transfers from one of the catchment's primary schools will during the course of the year be given
the opportunity to visit Ysgol Brynrefail on at least two occasions, in the Autumn and Summer Terms. An open
evening will be arranged in school during the prior Autumn Term for the parents of new pupils to see the school
environment and to meet some of the staff.
I believe that it is very important to build strong links between the school and parents, therefore, I encourage you to
take advantage of every opportunity to strengthen these links through formal or informal occasions during the
year.
If any parent wishes to make an appointment to see me, or the relevant Head of Year, to discuss any aspect of the
school, would you please phone or write beforehand to make arrangements.

Ysgol gyfun, gymunedol, wledig o faint canolig yw Ysgol Brynrefail sy'n sefyll yng nghanol dalgylch ysgolion cynradd
troed Yr Wyddfa gan gynnwys ysgolion cynradd Bethel, Cwm y Glo, Waunfawr, Deiniolen, Llanberis, Llanrug a
Phenisarwaun. Yn y bôn cefndir cyffelyb sydd i'r ysgolion hyn ac felly bydd y newydd-ddyfodiaid yn cyfarfod â
disgyblion eraill o gefndir tebyg iawn i'w gilydd.
Ar hyn o bryd mae 743 o ddisgyblion yn mynychu'r ysgol a nid yw'n rhy fawr i bawb allu dod i adnabod ei gilydd mewn
awyrgylch gartrefol. Felly, nid yw dod i Ysgol Brynrefail o ysgol gynradd yn brofiad arswydus, ac mae disgyblion
newydd yn ymgartrefu yn fuan iawn. Yn wir mae dieithriaid ac ymwelwyr cyson yn nodi yr awyrgylch gwrtais, gynnes,
Gymreig fel un o nodweddion hynotaf yr ysgol. Nid oes angen i ddisgyblion newydd bryderu, ac os oes unrhyw
broblem yn codi, gall y disgybl ofyn am gymorth gan unrhyw aelod o’r staff, gan wneud hynny ar unwaith.

AMACN YR YSGOL
Prif amcan yr ysgol yw sicrhau fod pob disgybl yn cael ei drin a'i barchu fel person cyflawn ac yn cael ei gynorthwyo

AMCANION ACADEMAIDD
 Cyflwyno pynciau'r Cwricwlwm Cenedlaethol yng Nghyfnodau Allweddol 3 a 4 a darpar cyrsiau addas ôl 16

 Paratoi cyrsiau addas a diddorol a'u cyflwyno trwy ddulliau dysgu priodol er mwyn datblygu gallu pob disgybl

ABSENOLDEBAU (1)
Petai disgybl yn absennol am unrhyw reswm disgwylir iddo(i) ddod a nodyn o eglurhad i'w athro/awes dosbarth pan
mae'n dychwelyd. Byddai galwad ffôn i’r ysgol ar fore cyntaf yr absenoldeb yn gymorth mawr i’r ysgol. Mae trefn o
fewn yr ysgol i ddelio â thriwantiaeth. Dylai rhieni osgoi cymryd eu plentyn/plant allan o’r ysgol am wyliau teulu yn
ystod tymor ysgol, yn enwedig yn ystod arholiadau allanol. Os yn angenrheidiol, caniateir absenoldeb awdurdodedig o
hyd at un wythnos mewn cyfanswm mewn unrhyw flwyddyn ysgol. Ni fydd yr ysgol yn awdurdodi absenoldeb mwy
nag un wythnos mewn blwyddyn ysgol ar gyfer gwyliau teulu a hynny mond yn Flwyddyn 7-9. Gweler Atodiad 4.

Mae gwersi Addysg Grefyddol yn digwydd ym mhob blwyddyn o'r ysgol. Yn ogystal trefnir gwasanaethau crefyddol
boreol rheolaidd fesul Cyfnod Allweddol neu fesul dosbarth. Gall rhiant eithrio plentyn o wersi Addysg Grefyddol a
chydaddoliad ac fe wneir trefniadau i'w harolygu yn ystod y cyfnod hwn.

YSGOL BRYNREFAIL
Ysgol Brynrefail is a medium sized rural community comprehensive school located at the centre of the primary school
catchment at the foot of Snowdon. These schools include Bethel, Cwm y Glô, Waunfawr, Deiniolen, Llanberis, Llanrug
and Penisarwaun. These schools have essentially the same sort of environment so that newcomers to Ysgol Brynrefail
will meet other pupils who come from similar backgrounds.
At present 743 pupils attend the school ensuring that it is not too large for everyone to get to know one another in a
friendly and homely atmosphere. Therefore, transferring to Ysgol Brynrefail from one of the primary schools is not a
frightening experience and new pupils soon settle down. Indeed frequent visitors and strangers alike comment on the
warm, courteous, Welsh atmosphere as being one of the school's main features. New pupils should not be concerned.
However, if a problem does crop up your child can immediately ask for help from any member of staff.
The school celebrated its centenary in September 2000.
SCHOOL AIM
The main aim is to ensure that every pupil is treated and respected as a complete person and is assisted and
nurtured to develop as a person in every respect.
ACADEMIC AIMS
*Teach the National Curriculum Subjects in Key Stage 3 and 4 and offer suitable post 16 courses.
*Prepare suitable and interesting courses and use suitable teaching methods to develop every pupil to the best of
his/her ability.
*Develop courses which reflect knowledge and culture so that pupils will develop as enlightened members of the
community.
*Encourage the pupil's personal interests so that he/she may choose a suitable career.
*Develop every pupil to become confidently bilingual so that he/she may become a full member of the bilingual
community in which he/she lives.
*Ensure an education which strengthens the understanding of the national and global environment.
*Ensure that pupils with special needs are given every opportunity and support to develop.
PASTROL AIMS
*Fostering self-discipline within pupils in a homely and friendly atmosphere.
*Being constructive when reprimanding, placing emphasis on reasoning rather than punishment.
*Treating pupils with respect and sympathy to foster healthy relationships between teachers and pupils. No pupil
should be belittled in any way.
*Being aware of any sign of unhappiness in pupils manifested by poor effort, poor behaviour, lateness or absenteeism.
SOCIAL AIMS
*To create a civilised environment where pupils and staff respect each other and co-operate fully to enhance the
education process.
*To create an atmosphere of diligence and friendliness.
*Fostering formal and informal extra-curricular activities that will enrich the social experiences of the pupils.
ABSENCES (1)
If a pupil is absent for any period of time it is expected that a note explaining the nature of the absence is brought to
the form teacher on his/her return. A phone call to the school on the first morning of the absence would be a big help.
The school implements a system for tackling truancy. Parents should refrain from taking their child/children away on
holidays during the school term, especially during external examinations. If it is absolutely unavoidable, the school
will agree to an authorised absence of up to one week in total for family holidays during any school year. Any absence
longer than one week for family holidays will not be authorised by the school and that is for Year 7-9 only.

RELIGIOUS EDUCATION (2)
Religious Education is presented in every school year. Regular morning assemblies are arranged by Key Stages or by
class. A parent may exclude a pupil from Religious Education lessons and assemblies and arrangements for their
supervision will be made during these periods.

ADDYSG A CHYFARWYDDYD GYRFAOEDD (3)
Darperir y rhaglen addysg yrfaoedd fel ffordd o feithrin gwybodaeth gyffredinol y disgybl, ei ddealltwriaeth a’i brofiad
o addysg hyfforddiant a chyfleoedd cyflogaeth. Mae’n anelu i helpu pobl ifanc i feithrin y medrau sy’n angenrheidiol i
ddod o hyd i wybodaeth a’i defnyddio, i fod yn realistig (ond yn uchelgeisiol), ynglŷn â’u galluoedd a’u dyheadau
personol ac i wneud penderfyniadau gwybodus.
Mae’r cyfarwyddyd gyrfaoedd sydd ar gael yn yr ysgol yn cynorthwyo unigolion i gymhwyso gwybodaeth, eu medrau
a’u dealltwriaeth at eu hunain er mwyn gwneud dewisiadau realistig a phenderfyniadau a chynlluniau priodol ynglyn
a’u dyfodol. Mae’r cyfarwyddyd yn cynnig cyfloed i adolygu’r hyn a ddysgwyd, i osod nodau newydd ac i gofnodi
cyraeddiadau mewn amrywiaeth o feysydd. Fel rheol nodweddir cyfarwyddyd effeithiol gan ddidueddwch,
cyfrinachedd a hygyrchedd - hoffem feddwl ein bod yn cyrraedd y nodweddion pwysig yma!
Mae’r rhaglen yn cael ei ddarparu i flynyddoedd 9 i 11 ac yn ymestyn i flynyddoedd 12 i 13. Gwneir hyn drwy gyfrwng
rhaglen raddedig sydd wedi ei integreiddio o fewn rhaglen ABCh yn ogystal â chyfrannu tuag at gwricwlwm ehangach
yr ysgol. Fel rhan o’r ddarpariaeth y bwriad yw i bob disgybl yn ystod cyfnodau gwahanol dderbyn profiadau fel
cymorth gyda gwneud dewisiadau, o leiaf un wythnos o brofiad gwaith, un ffug gyfweliad, mynychu prynhawn
opsiynau a mynychu cyfweliad gyda Chynghorydd Gyrfa. Mae’r ysgol yn gweithio’n agos gydag asiantaethau allanol fel
Gyrfa Cymru, Colegau Addysg Bellach ac Uwch, Asiantaethau Hyfforddi, Adran Addysg y Cynulliad, Cyngor Gwynedd a
nifer o gyflogwyr lleol.
Mae’r adran Gyrfaoedd a Gyrfa Cymru yn ceisio gadael i rieni/gwarchodwyr wybod beth sy’n mynd ymlaen ar adegau
gwahanol. Maent hefyd ar gael yn ystod nosweithiau rhieni neu pan yn gyfleus i geisio ateb unrhyw gwestiwn
perthnasol.
ADDYSG RHYW (4)
Mae addysg rhyw yn rhan allweddol a chreiddiol o gwricwlwm pob disgybl ac mae'r modd y'i cyflwynir yn annog
disgyblion ei drafod mewn cyd-destun moesol a chymdeithasol.
Defnyddir gwersi Gwyddoniaeth yng Nghyfnod Allweddol 3 i ddysgu'r agweddau ffeithiol biolegol ac addysg iechyd.
Yng Nghyfnod Allweddol 4 defnyddir y rhaglen Addysg Bersonol a Chymdeithasol i drafod materion cymdeithasol,
cam-drin, agweddau ar ryw, creu perthynas, afiechydon fel SDIC a chynllunio teulu. Gwahoddir arbenigwyr o fyd
addysg iechyd i'r ysgol i gyfrannu i'r rhaglen hon. Gall rhiant dynnu plentyn o'r cyfan neu ran o'r rhaglen addysg rhyw.
ARHOLIADAU ALLANOL (5)
Bydd holl ddisgyblion yr ysgol yn derbyn asesiadau athrawon yn 14 oed ym mhob pwnc.
Bydd y mwyafrif helaeth o'n disgyblion yn sefyll arholiadau TGAU Cyd Bwyllgor Addysg Cymru yn 16 oed. Gall nifer
fechan o'r disgyblion yn unol â'u cyrhaeddiad, sefyll arholiad y Dystysgrif Lefel Mynediad. Yna, cânt gyfle i sefyll
arholiadau lefel A neu AS, os ydynt am aros ymlaen i’r Chweched Dosbarth.
Cynhwysir ffigyrau canlyniadau arholiadau a'r pynciau mae'r disgyblion yn eu sefyll yn yr ysgol yn yr atodiadau yng
nghefn y llyfryn yma. Gweler Atodiad 7, 8 a 9.
Un agwedd yn unig o lwyddiant ysgol yw canlyniadau arholiadau ac mae tystiolaeth fod rhieni yn rhoi pwys ar
agweddau eraill yn ogystal megis gweithgareddau allgyrsiol, disgyblaeth a gwedd ac adnoddau'r ysgol. Yn aml bydd
canlyniadau arholiadau yn adlewyrchu'r amrywiaeth yn natur y dalgylchoedd yn hytrach na llwyddiant ysgol benodol.
Mae’n holl bwysig na fydd disgyblion yn absennol ar gyfer arholiadau allanol.
AROLWG O'R YSGOL

Cafwyd Arolwg o waith yr ysgol yn Nhachwedd 2012. Cafwyd canmoliaeth i fywyd a gwaith yr ysgol - gellid gweld yr
adroddiad ar safwe ESTYN neu drwy safwe’r ysgol (ond nodwyd bod angen gwelliant mewn rhai meysydd).
ASESU AC ADRODD (7)
Mae asesu yn broses hanfodol a pharhaus fel rhan o gynllun gwaith pob adran. Ar wahân i asesu cyson yn ystod y
flwyddyn cedwir tystiolaeth er mwyn rhoi barn ar lefel cyrhaeddiad ac ymdrech ym mhob pwnc. Cynhelir profion ac
arholiadau rheolaidd gan adrodd i rieni ddwywaith neu dair pob blwyddyn ac mewn cyfarfodydd ffurfiol lle ceir cyfle i
gyfarfod yr athrawon sy'n dysgu'r disgyblion.

CAREERS EDUCATION (3)
The careers education programme is a means of developing an individual’s general knowledge, understanding and
experience of education and training and employment opportunities. Also the programme aims to help young people
develop the skills necessary to obtain and handle information, be realistic (but ambitious) about personal capabilities
and aspirations and make informed decisions regarding their future.
The careers guidance is a means of helping individuals apply their knowledge, skills and information to make realistic
choices and appropriate decisions about future options. It also offers opportunities to review learning, set new goals
and record achievements in a variety of areas. Effective guidance is generally characterised by impartiality,
confidentiality and accessibility – we like to think that we achieve these important goals.
Careers education is generally provided through a progressive programme within PSE as well as contributing to the
school’s wider curriculum. As part of the provision it is intended that each pupil at the appropriate times between
years 9 and 13 will have the opportunity of receiving guidance about making decisions, at least a week’s work
experience, a mock interview with a local employer, attending an options meeting and an interview with a careers
adviser. The school works closely with outside agencies and industry such as the Careers Wales, Further and Higher
education institutions, the Assembly‘s Education Department, Gwynedd Council and numerous local employers.
The Careers department and Careers Wales strive to inform parents/guardians about current developments. They are
always available during parents evenings or any other pre-arranged times to answer any relevant questions or issues
which may be of concern.
SEX EDUCATION (4)
Sex education is a core element of every pupil's curriculum and the way in which it is taught fosters pupils to discuss
the subject within a moral and social context.
Science lessons in Key Stage 3 are used to teach the biological facts and Health Education lessons in Key Stage Four's
Personal and Social Education are used to deal with social matters, abuse, attitude to sex, creating relationships,
infections such as AIDS and family planning. Experts from the health education field are invited to school to contribute
to this programme. Parents may exclude their child from part or the entire sex education programme.
EXTERNAL EXAMINATIONS (5)
Every pupil at the school is given a teacher assessment at 14 years old in every subject.
The majority of the pupils will sit the Welsh Joint Education Committee's GCSE examinations at 16 years of age. A
small number, depending on their academic ability, will sit the Entry Level Certificate examination. Pupils will then be
given the opportunity to sit A and AS examinations if they return to the Sixth Form.
The results of the subject examinations sat by pupils is noted in Appendix 7-9 in the back of this handbook.
Examination results are only one aspect of a school's success and there is evidence that parents also place emphasis
on other aspects such as extra-curricular activities, discipline and the school's appearance and resources. The
examination results often reflect the variety in the nature of the catchment areas rather than an individual school's
success. It is imperative that pupils are not absent for external examinations.
SCHOOL INSPECTION (6)
The school was inspected in November 2012. The life and work of the school was praised but it was noted that
improvement was required in some aspects. The Report is available on the ESTYN website or via the school’s website.
ASSESSMENT AND REPORTING (7)
Assessment is an essential and continuous process within the school, it forms part of every department's scheme of
work. Apart from regular assessment that takes place throughout the year to obtain evidence to support judgements
on levels of achievement in every subject, tests and examinations are held to report to parents at formal parents'
evenings when you can discuss your child's progress with the teachers.

During the course of the year there will be five In Service Training days when the school will be closed to pupils and
indicated on the school calendar. See Appendix 11 for the 2013 –2014 Calendar.
RECORDS OF ACHIEVEMENT (9)
Records of Achievement will be awarded to all pupils in year 11 its intention is to provide a resume of many personal
attributes which pupils possess but which are not recorded through formal external
examinations and from work within the classroom.
CURRICULUM OF THE SCHOOL (10)
The school prepares a broad, balanced curriculum based upon the requirements of the subjects of the National
Curriculum and the cross-curricular themes associated with it.

Mae'n bwysig fod gwaith Cyfnodau Allweddol 3 a 4 yn gosod sylfaen ar gyfer yr hyn a ddewisir gan ein disgyblion yn y
Chweched dosbarth. Mae'r mwyafrif helaeth ohonynt yn dewis dychwelyd i'r ysgol i astudio pynciau Lefel A neu AS.
Cânt gyfnodau tiwtora a chraidd cyffredin yn ogystal ag astudio ar gyfer Bagloriaeth Cymraeg Lefel Uwch.
Dros y blynyddoedd diwethaf mae nifer o'n disgyblion wedi manteisio ar yr arferiad o gynnal rhai pynciau ar y cyd ag
ysgolion eraill ac yn fwy diweddar gyda Choleg Menai. Mae cyfanswm o dros 30 o gyrsiau ar gael yn y Chweched
Dosbarth.
CYFEILLION YSGOL BRYNREFAIL (11)
Dyma'r enw a fabwysiadwyd gan gymdeithas rhieni ac athrawon yr ysgol. Maent yn trefnu nifer o weithgareddau
cymdeithasol ac addysgol yn ystod y flwyddyn. Dros y blynyddoedd maent hefyd wedi codi symiau sylweddol o arian i
helpu brynu offer ac adnoddau i'r ysgol.
CYFLE CYFARTAL (12)
Ymdrechir i hyrwyddo cyfleoedd cyfartal ym mhob agwedd o fywyd yr ysgol.
CYFLWR MEDDYGOL (13)
Disgwylir i rieni hysbysu'r ysgol am unrhyw gyflwr meddygol neu glinigol a allai effeithio ar allu'r disgybl i wneud
unrhyw agwedd o waith yr ysgol.
Petai disgybl yn sâl yn yr ysgol gwneir pob ymdrech iddo(i) fynd adref ar ôl cysylltu â'r rhiant.
Ni roddir tabledi nac unrhyw foddion i ddisgybl oni bai fod y rhiant yn cysylltu drwy lythyr a'r ysgol i wneud trefniadau

Mae’r nyrs ysgol yn cynnal meddygfa wythnosol yn yr ysgol. Gwahoddir disgyblion i drefnu apwyntiad gyda’r meddyg

Bydd disgyblion ag anghenion arbennig yn cael eu cynnal naill ai gyda chymorth athrawon cynhaliol neu

Mae'r ysgol yn hybu llawer o gysylltiadau yn y maes yma drwy weithgareddau amrywiol, lleoli athrawon mewn
diwydiant, ymweliadau â gweithfeydd a diwydiannau a chyfnodau o brofiad gwaith i bob disgybl.
Mae pob disgybl ym mlwyddyn 10 ac 11 yn cymryd rhan yn y Cynllun Compact, sef cynllun a gefnogir gan gyflogwyr i
roi ystyriaeth fwy ffafriol i ddisgyblion sy'n cwblhau gofynion presenoldeb, prydlondeb, cwblhau gwaith cwrs a
phrofiad gwaith yn foddhaol fel eu bod yn ennill Tystysgrif Compact.
CYSWLLT Â RHIENI (18)
Mae perthynas agos rhwng rhieni a'r ysgol yn bwysig iawn ac anogir rhieni i fanteisio ar bob cyfle ffurfiol fel yr
ymweliadau wrth drosglwyddo o'r cynradd a nosweithiau rhieni i gyfarfod â'r athrawon sy'n dysgu eu plant, neu yn
anffurfiol mewn cyngherddau, eisteddfod neu weithgareddau'r Gymdeithas Cyfeillion.
Petai angen fe gysylltir â'r cartref ar unrhyw adeg pan fydd problem sylweddol ynglŷn â disgybl yn codi, boed hynny yn
fater academaidd neu fugeiliol. Credir mai drwy gydweithio a chyd -drafod rhwng ysgol a chartref y ceir ateb i unrhyw
bryder o bwys. Defnyddir y Llyfr Cyswllt Cartref gan y disgyblion i gofnodi gwaith cartref, dyddiadau pwysig,

THE SIXTH FORM CURRICULUM
It is important that the work done during Key Stage 3 and 4 provides a foundation for the work that is chosen by
pupils in the sixth form. The great majority of our pupils choose to return to school to study subjects at A and AS.
level. They also receive a common core and tutorial periods as well as studying for the Welsh
Baccalaureate
Advanced Level.
Over the last few years some pupils have taken advantage of the practice of studying some subjects in a
consortium of Arfon schools and more recently at Coleg Menai. There are more than 30 courses available to the Sixth
Form.
FRIENDS OF YSGOL BRYNREFAIL (11)
Cyfeillion Ysgol Brynrefail is the name adopted by the parent teacher association. The association arranges activities
during the year which are both social and educational in nature. They have over the years raised a considerable sum
of money to buy equipment and resources for school.
EQUAL OPPORTUNITIES (12)
Every effort is made to foster equal opportunities in every aspect of school life.
MEDICAL CONDITIONS (13)
Parents are expected to inform the school of any medical or clinical condition which might affect a pupil's ability to
follow any element of the curriculum.
If a pupil is still in school every effort will be made to get him/ her home after contacting a parent or relative.
Tablets or medication are not given in school unless requested in writing by parents.
The school nurse holds a weekly surgery at the school. Pupils are invited to make an appointment with the school
doctor if required.
INSTRUMENTAL MUSIC SCHEME (14)
The school supports the Instrument Scheme organised by the Local Authority which develops pupils’ aptitude in
playing musical instruments. The scheme is reviewed annually.
SUPPORTING PUPILS WITH FURTHER EDUCATIONAL NEEDS (15)
Pupils with special needs are supported either by support teachers or classroom assistants within normal classes or by
withdrawing pupils from some classes for support in core subjects. See Appendix 6.

It is possible that parents might wish to contact some element of the support services such as the School's
Education Welfare Service, the Police Liaison Service, the Social Services, the School Meals Service, School Transport
or the Support Grants Department.

Head of Schools’ Services, Mr Dewi R. Jones, Education Department, Castle Street, Caernarfon.

CONTACT WITH THE WORLD OF BUSINESS AND INDUSTRY (17)
The school promotes many links in this sphere through various schemes as well as placing teachers in industry, visits
to industry and work experience for every pupil.
Every pupil in years 10 and 11 take part in the Compact Award Scheme which is supported by employers whereby a
more favourable consideration is given to pupils who have gained the Compact Award by
completing targets for punctuality, attendance, the completion of coursework and work experience.
CONTACT WITH PARENTS (18)
Close links between school and parents are very important and parents are encouraged to take advantage of every
formal opportunity such as the visit to school when pupils are transferring from primary school or
parents' evenings when discussions with staff allow you to discuss your child's progress, or informally at
concerts, eisteddfod or at PTA functions.
If necessary the school will contact parents whenever there is a substantial problem involving a pupil which may be
academic or pastoral in nature. I believe that it is only through co-operation and discussion with
parents that an answer to any matter of substance will be reached. The Home Link Book is used by the pupils to
record homework, important dates, activities, etc. It is also used to convey messages between school and the home.

GRWPIAU A DULLIAU DYSGU (23)
Mae maint y rhan fwyaf o ddosbarthiadau yn yr ysgol gyda niferoedd o tua 28 yn CA3 a llai yn CA4. Ceir amrywiaeth
o ddulliau dysgu lle mae disgyblion yn cael eu grwpio mewn dosbarthiadau o wahanol allu. Yr arferiad mwyaf cyffredin
yw cynnal dosbarthiadau o allu cymysg,ond mae enghreifftiau o setio a bandio mewn rhai pynciau. Defnyddir
amrywiaeth o ddulliau dysgu gan gynnwys gwaith dosbarth cyfan, gwaith grwp ac ymchwilio unigol er mwyn herio'r
unigolyn.
GWAITH CARTREF (24)
Bydd gwaith cartref y cael ei osod yn rheolaidd ym mhob pwnc. Defnyddir gwaith cartref i fesur ymroddiad disgybl ac i
fagu'r arferiad o weithio yn annibynnol, cyson a threfnus.
Bydd y gwaith a osodir fel gwaith cartref yn cael ei gofnodi yn y Llyfr Cyswllt Cartref.
GWIG YSGOL (25)
Mae disgwyl i'r disgyblion sy'n mynychu'r ysgol wisgo gwisg arbennig.
Mae llawer rheswm am hyn ond y prif reswm yw dangos eu bod yn ddisgyblion Ysgol Brynrefail a'u bod yn falch o'r
ysgol ac mae'r wisg ysgol yn arwydd o hynny. Cefnogir y wisg ysgol gan y Corff Llywodraethol. Ceir rhestr o'r wisg yn
Atodiad 3. Gall rhieni mewn achosion o angen gwneud cais am grant gwisg i'r Awdurdod Addysg.

Cedwir cofnod cwricwlaidd ar gyfer pob disgybl ac fe'i diweddarir yn flynyddol. Dylid cysylltu â'r Prifathro i drafod
adroddiad unrhyw ddisgybl.
Lluniau/fideos - bydd yr ysgol yn tynnu lluniau llonydd a/neu symudol o’r disgyblion fel cofnod o waith yr ysgol ac

DAMAGE TO PROPERTY (20)
It is expected that anyone caught damaging school property or property belonging to staff or other pupils will be
expected to pay for the damage caused.
DISCIPLINE (21)
Every teacher is responsible for discipline within the class. Duty rotas are prepared to supervise pupils during the
lunch hour and morning break.
Any discipline problems will be directed to the Head of Year in the first instance and to the Deputy Heads or
Headmaster if the matter deserves their attention.
Emphasis is placed on pupils using their common sense by behaving reasonably and independently without too much
supervision. The aim is to develop self-discipline and the ability to behave wisely without having someone in authority
to be at hand to reprimand on every occasion. The majority of pupils respond very
favourably to this type of situation.
If necessary pupils will be punished by being kept in at lunchtime or after school after parents have been
informed.
PASTROL CARE (22)
The pastoral system is intended to look after a pupil's welfare by supervising his/her general behaviour and
development. The form teacher who registers the form twice a day is responsible for supervising attendance and
ensuring that the pupils understand school rules.
Substantial problems are directed to the Head of Year in the first place and, if necessary, to the Deputies or to the
Headmaster. We believe in drawing parents' attention to any substantial matter which takes place in school, this will
be done by phone or by letter.
TEACHING GROUPS (23)
Generally, class sizes are usually about 28 in KS3 and smaller classes in KS4. A variety of teaching methods are used to
meet the needs of mixed ability classes. There are examples of classes in some subjects which are banded or streamed
according to ability. The most common practice is one of mixed ability classes. However, setting and banding does
occur in some subjects. A variety of teaching methods including whole class, group and individual work, provide
suitable individual challenge for every pupil.
HOMEWORK (24)
Homework is set regularly in every subject. Homework is used to measure a pupil's effort and to develop the ability to
work independently, regularly and orderly.
Homework will be recorded in the pupil's Home Link Book.
SCHOOL UNIFORM (25)
It is expected that pupils will wear a special uniform which is supported by the school governors.
See Appendix 3. There are many reasons for this but the main one however, is to indicate that pupils belong to Ysgol
Brynrefail and are proud of the school. Parents who experience financial hardships can apply to the Local Authority for
a clothing grant.
INFORMATION ON PUPILS (26)
Curricular records which are updated annually are kept on pupils. Parents wishing to discuss the record of any child
should, in the first instance contact the Head teacher.
Photographs/videos – the school will take still and/or moving pictures of the pupils as a record of the school’s work
and may sometimes, according to the Head teacher’s discretion, invite persons from the public media to the school to
photograph and/or film. It will be taken for granted that parents/guardians do not object to this. If you do, could you
please confirm this by letter to the Head teacher.

gymryd rhan lawn yn y gweithgareddau hyn.
LLWYDDIANT DISGYBLION YM MYD CHWARAEON (28)
Dros y blynyddoedd mae'r ysgol wedi profi nifer o lwyddiannau ar lefel rhanbarthol a chenedlaethol gyda disgyblion
yn disgleirio ym myd y bêl, athletau a gweithgareddau awyr agored. Mae neuadd chwaraeon newydd wedi ei hagor
ers Gwanwyn 2006.
LLYFRGELL ADNODDAU (29)
Mae'r ysgol yn falch iawn o'i llyfrgell adnoddau, sef tair ystafell nesaf i'w gilydd. Mae un yn cynnwys y llyfrgell
draddodiadol gydag amrywiaeth helaeth o offer cyfrifiadurol diweddaraf gyda llyfrgellydd yn goruchwylio ac yn
cynorthwyo’r disgyblion wrth eu gwaith. Yn y ddwy ystafell arall lleolir tri deg o gyfrifiaduron yr un i waith dosbarth a
chaiff pob disgybl gyfle i ddefnyddio pob math o offer i bwrpas technoleg gwybodaeth.
Mae pob ystafell ddysgu yn gysylltiedig â’r rhwydwaith cyfrifiadurol cwricwlaidd sy’n galluogi mynediad i’r Wê. Hefyd,
mae dwy ystafell technoleg gwybodaeth ychwanegol yn y bloc Technoleg newydd gafodd ei agor yn Ionawr 2003.
Mae tua 300 o gyfrifiaduron ar rwydwaith TGC yr ysgol i gyd â chyswllt band llydan â’r We.
MYNEDIAD I’R YSGOL (30)
Caiff pob disgybl sy'n mynychu ysgol gynradd yn nalgylch Ysgol Brynrefail yr hawl i fynediad iddi. 142 yw rhif mynediad
yr ysgol. Gwneir cysylltiadau â rhieni yn ystod tymor cyntaf y flwyddyn academaidd cyn i ddisgybl drosglwyddo i ysgol
uwchradd. Gwrandewir ar apeliadau gan y Cyfarwyddwr Addysg.
Dylai rhiant sy'n symud i mewn i'r ardal gysylltu â'r Prifathro yn y man cyntaf.
POLISI IAITH (31)
Gan fod yr ysgol wedi ei lleoli mewn ardal naturiol Gymreig, gydag ond lleiafrif o ddysgwyr a'i bod yn fwy na 600
disgybl o faint, fe'i gosodwyd yng nghategori B(i) yn ôl Dogfen Polisi Iaith Gwynedd.
Prif nôd polisi iaith yr ysgol yw sicrhau fod pob disgybl yn datblygu'n hyderus ddwyieithog ac felly fe ddysgir y
Gymraeg a'r Saesneg i bob disgybl hyd ddiwedd Blwyddyn 11. Fe bennir y cyfrwng dysgu a'r cydbwysedd ieithyddol yn
unol â'r ddealltwriaeth o anghenion dwyieithog y disgyblion unigol.
Cymraeg yw iaith gyfathrebu arferol yn yr ysgol.
PROFION AC ARHOLIADAU MEWNOL (32)
Gosodir profion rheolaidd ym mhob adran fel ffordd o fesur cynnydd, ymdrech ac ymroddiad disgybl i'w waith.
Defnyddir y canlyniadau fel un dystiolaeth i helpu i osod disgybl mewn grŵp neu set dysgu.
Trefnir profion hanner tymor ac anfonir adroddiad at y rhieni.
PROFIAD GWAITH AC YMWYBYDDIAETH O FYD GWAITH (33)
Mae gan yr ysgol bolisi strwythuredig i sicrhau rhaglen addysg diwydiant a busnes gyda'r pwyslais ar ei integreiddio i
gwricwlwm yr ysgol. Fel rhan o'r rhaglen hon rhoddir lleoliadau profiad gwaith i bob disgybl yn Flwyddyn 11 ac 12.
Cyn trefnu'r lleoliad bydd yr ysgol yn trafod a phenderfynu ar nôd ac amcanion y lleoliad a'i berthnasedd i'r disgybl.
Ceir cefnogaeth Gyrfa Cymru i hyrwyddo cysylltiadau â byd gwaith a chyflogwyr. Mae’r ysgol wedi derbyn dau Wobr
Cydnabod Ansawdd am ei gwaith arbennig gyda Phrofiad Gwaith cyn 16 oed ac am eu gwaith gyda Chyfarwyddyd ac

EXTRA-CURRICULAR ACTIVITIES WITHIN THE SCHOOL (27)
A wide variety of activities and experiences are provided for our pupils. Amongst the most frequent are:








The Urdd activities including visits to Glanllyn.
Games and sports tournaments including hockey, soccer, netball, athletics, swimming, basketball and rugby.
Theatre visits.
Speakers are invited together with travelling drama, dance and other performing groups.
There is a successful school eisteddfod together with other competitions.
There is usually a journey abroad during Easter or at the end of the Summer Term
Visits to industries and other places of work.
Skills week – Yr.7 to 10 – summer term – a week of extended curricular experiences for pupils to enrich their
education. Each pupil is expected to take a full and active part in all of these activities.
SPORTS SUCCESSES (28)
Over the years the school has had many very successful sports individuals and teams who have gained
recognition
at regional and national level in athletics, team sports and outdoor activities. A new sports hall was opened in Spring
2006.
RESOURCES LIBRARY (29)
The school is rightly very proud of its resources library which occupies three adjacent rooms. One is a
traditional library with a selection of the latest computer equipment supervised by a librarian who can assist pupils
with their work. The other two rooms contain thirty computers each for class work whereby every pupil is given the
opportunity to develop information technology skills.
All classrooms in the school have been linked to the academic computer network which provides access to the
internet. Two further IT rooms became available in January 2003 upon completion of the new Technology block.
There are about 300 computers on the school ITC network, all with a broadband link to the Internet.
ACCESS TO SCHOOL (30)
Every pupil who attends a primary school within Ysgol Brynrefail's catchment is given access to the school. The
admission number is 142. Parents are contacted early in the final year of primary school. The Director of Education will
listen to appeals.
Parents who move into the area should contact the Head teacher in the first instance.
LANGUAGE POLICY (31)
The school is located in a naturally Welsh environment with only a minority of learners and with over 600 pupils
therefore, it has been placed into the B(i) category according to the Gwynedd Language Policy.
The main aim of that policy is to ensure that every pupil develops to become fluently bilingual therefore, both Welsh
and English is taught to every pupil to the end of year 11. The medium of learning and language balance is determined
by the pupil's individual needs. Welsh is the usual language of communication within the school.
TESTS AND INTERNAL EXAMINATIONS (32)
Regular tests are set in every department as one means of measuring a pupil's effort, progress and
determination in his/her work. The result may be used as one measure to place pupils in groups or sets.
Half term assessments are undertaken and reports presented to parents.
WORK EXPERIANCE (33)
The school has a structured policy which is integrated to the curriculum to ensure a programme of study of industry
and the world of work. As an element of this programme, work experience is provided for all pupils in Year 11 and 12.
Before arranging the location discussion takes place with the pupil outlining the aims and objectives of the
placement.
Careers Wales provides links with the world of work and with employers. The school has been awarded two
Recognition of Quality Awards for pre-16 Work Experience and for Work
Related Education and Guidance across the school.

PRACTICAL RULES (34)
Rules aim to ensure order within school. If these are not followed then order is lost.









Walk orderly on the right on corridors and on stairs. Do not run.
Punctuality to lessons and school is expected.
A pupil's name should appear on all clothing and possessions.
If it is necessary to bring a sum of money to school it should be given to the Secretary for safe keeping. The
school will not be responsible for losses.
School uniform should always be worn. See Appendix 3.
The building should be cleared at lunchtime. The Hall is used for shelter during bad weather.
Nobody should leave the school grounds.
Parental consent and a lunch pass is required to leave school during the lunch hour – Llanrug pupils only
Pupils should remain on the school yard to await school transport at the end of the day.
This list may be amended as necessary. See the Code of Conduct for Pupils and the Home School
Agreement - Appendix 12.
SCHOOL HOUSES (35)
Pupils are allocated to one of four houses; Eilian, Elidir, Eryri or Gwyrfai. Competitions are arranged
between them in hockey, soccer, athletics and of course at the school eisteddfod.
PAYING FOR SCHOOL ACTIVITIES (36)
The Local Education Authority has adopted a policy of receiving payment from pupils for:






the cost of accommodation and meals on school visits.
activities outside school hours.
external examinations when the school does not prepare pupils for the subject during that year.
examination costs when the pupil fails to complete the requirements or fails to attend the examination
without an adequate reason.
damage to or loss of school property.
takes part in the County Music Scheme.
A request for voluntary contributions is made to parents when it is not possible to raise money for an activity but it is
ensured that no pupil will be refused participation when parents cannot pay. It is possible that some activities cannot
be held if there are insufficient voluntary contributions available.
COMPLAINTS PROCEDURE (37)
The local Education Authority in accordance with the legal requirements, has established a procedure by which
governing bodies of the LEA Schools should act in cases of complaints. The Governing Body has adopted the
procedure.
The procedure is outlined in a document at school. Free copies can be made available.
However, it should be pointed out that most complaints can be dealt with quickly and efficiently by discussing the
matter with the Head of Year or the Head teacher. This should be the reasonable first step and the Governing Body
would expect this to have been undertaken before conveying a formal complaint.
You should make an appointment through the Secretary to see the Head of Year or the Head teacher.
SCHOOL DAY (38)
The day is divided into six lessons each being 50 minutes long. A bell is rung between lessons and the pupils have to
move from one specialist room to another. Whilst moving around the school between lessons pupils should
remember to do so in an orderly manner keeping to the right in the corridors and stairs.

apelio yn erbyn y gwaharddiad i Gadeirydd y Llywodraethwyr. Os bydd y Prifathro o'r farn bod angen ymestyn yr
ataliad gall y Cadeirydd awdurdodi ei ymestyn am gyfnod hyd at bedwardeg pump diwrnod ysgol, ond yn ystod y

LUNCHTIME ARRANGEMENTS (39)
For safety reasons pupils should inform the form teacher of their intent to:
Either
take lunch at home provided they live close enough to walk home during the lunch hour.
Or
take school lunch. Free lunch is available to those who are eligible.
Or
bring a packed lunch to eat in the canteen.
The form teacher should be informed if these arrangements are changed at any time during the year. A pass should be
obtained by those leaving school at lunchtime only after supplying the school with the special form signed by a parent.
SERIOUS OFFENCESs (40)
The Headmaster has the right to suspend a pupil from school for any reason he sees fit for a period of up to fifteen
school days after consulting with the Chairman of the Governors. Parents have the right to appeal against a
suspension to the Chairman. If the Headmaster feels it necessary to extend the suspension the
Chairman can authorise this for a period of forty-five school days. However, during this time, a meeting of the
Governors must be called to consider the matter.
Under the 1993 Education Act it is possible to appeal to an independent Appeal Panel if the Local Education Authority
uphold the decision to expel the pupil.
The following offences are considered as serious misbehaviour:







threatening, fighting with or attacking another pupil or member of staff,
being rude or disobedient to a member of staff;
stealing;
vandalism;
leaving school without permission;
involved in drugs, alcohol misuse or smoking;
bringing dangerous weapons to school.
Seldom do examples of this kind of behaviour take place but if they do the punishment is severe and decisive.

syllabi and the Inspection report on the school conducted in November 2006.
Parents may make arrangements to visit the school in order to gain access to the documents.
Even though the information in the handbook is correct at the time of publication, it should not be assumed that
there will be no change affecting the relevant arrangements before the start of or during the school year or in
relation to subsequent years.

APPENDIX 3
SCHOOL UNIFORM
It is expected that the pupils wear the prescribed uniform. There are a number of reasons for this, the main one being
to indicate that the pupils belong to Ysgol Brynrefail and are proud of the School. The Governing Body supports the
school uniform. Parents who experience financial difficulties can apply to the Local Education Authority for a clothing
grant. The school uniform has been chosen to represent what is believed to be non-expensive items of clothing which
can be obtained locally. The interpretation of conforming with the school uniform will be subject to the Head
teacher’s discretion. Suppliers of items of the uniform include local shops:

APPENDIX 6
THE SPECIAL EDUCATIONAL NEED POLICY
The school’s policy to meet the special education needs encompass the legal requirements and the Local
Authority’s Code of Practice.
Education
The school’s curricular pattern to meet pupils’ special needs are based on the concept of support. This is achieved by:





Preparing differentiated tasks
Providing pupils with support in class
Providing advice and support to subject teachers
Giving staff in-service training
Providing pupils with specialist support.
Resources for supporting special needs are allocated within the school through:


a formula which ensures that money is allocated to every subject to meet the pupils; needs
the Departmental Development Plan.
For the year 2013/2014, 2 Teachers and 11 Classroom Assistants are allocated to support the special educational
needs of pupils.
This policy is revised and evaluated through:





A link with a nominated Governor
Co-operation with external agencies

CODE OF CONDUCT FOR PUPILS

Be honest and show respect towards yourself, all others and all property by behaving reasonably
and responsibly according to the Head teacher’s discretion.

Do your best to attend School regularly.

Be punctual at all times.

Keep to the school uniform rules consistently. Do not wear coats in the classrooms or in the Hall.
No caps to be worn at School.

You do not have the right to leave a lesson or the School grounds during the day unless given
permission.

The School should be kept clean and tidy. This means that all rubbish should be placed in a bin and
all walls, furniture and notice boards should be kept clean.

Move around the School in a responsible manner, keeping to the right on the corridors and stairs to
avoid congestion. Leave all rooms in an orderly manner.

Outside lesson times you should keep bags and coats either in a teaching room or on a peg on the
corridor – do not throw them on the floor anywhere.

Be prepared to work, to co-operate and to do your best always.

Make sure that you regularly have the correct books and equipment. Do not bring expensive
equipment to School such as CD players, mobile phones, etc.

All classwork and homework should be finished promptly to the best of your ability. All homework
should be recorded in the Communication Book or in the back of your books.

Food and drink to be consumed in the canteen only. No glass bottles or metal cans to be brought to
the School. No gum to be chewed at School.

You should behave in a responsible and respectful manner on all school trips ensuring that you
preserve the good name of the School.
The rules are for the benefit of everyone at the School and by keeping to them the
School will be one which we will all be proud of.
