Rabbi Michael Cohen
In the course of the past two weeks, the World Jewish community has been
bound together in prayer for the three boys abducted on their way home from high
school. Here at Young Israel, we had two emergency prayer gatherings; the first on
Sunday at midday to coincide with a special tefilla at the Kotel and a second on the
following Monday evening.
With the Gilad Shalit hostage crisis still a recent nightmare, we pray that
there will be a satisfactory resolution very soon to the current crisis and that Naftali,
Eiyal, and Gilad will soon be reunited with their families.
Maimonides writes in his Yad Chazaka that whenever tragedy befalls a
person or community each person has a responsibility to pray for salvation, and
furthermore, that a person who ignores their duty is exhibiting cruelty because they
could help, but are refusing to do so. As the initial hours have turned into days, and
the days have turned into weeks, there is a danger that we ourselves return to our
routine lives and turn our thoughts to other pressing matters, and our prayers for
these children and their families blends into that routine. For this reason, it is
suggested that one not include the prayer for their release every time we pray, but
select a different time each day to focus our prayers to Hashem for their release.

The Strike on Heaven
This
extremely
compelling
and
poignant film powerfully showcases the
tenacity of the Jewish people and their
unwavering commitment to Torah, despite the
desperation they lived with daily under the
Nazi regime. Through archival footage,
personal interviews with survivors and
Holocaust experts the film tells the story of the
Nazis’ wholesale attempt to spiritually
annihilate the Jews.
Followed by a discussion.
