ACT NDIS Awareness Package
Element 3: Transition
Agenda – Transition
 Introduction
 What are the key issues?
 How is transition to the NDIS happening in the ACT?
 ACT transition schedule
 What clients and consumers might want to know
 What does this mean for our clients and consumers?
What are the issues I need to know about?
 The NDIS changes how people with disability, their families
and carers make decisions about the future and their
supports.
 Many will be on top of the changes but some will still be
getting to understand the NDIS.
 You might be asked about the transition, what the changes
mean to people with disability, and what the NDIA does.
What are the issues I need to know about?
(continued)
 The rollout of the NDIS in the ACT is based mainly on age.
There is a schedule online here.
 ACT Government is transitioning the specialist disability
services it provides to non-government service providers.
 This means the size of the government workforce will
decrease and the size of the non-government workforce will
increase.
How is the transition happening in the ACT?
 People will be brought into the Scheme in a gradual way to
make it easier for people with disability, the NDIA, disability
service providers and workers to make the change.
 People started accessing the Scheme based on an ‘ages and
stages’ approach in July 2014, according to either date of
birth or, for school-age children, academic year.
 People in group homes will transition into the Scheme over
a two-year period. When one person in a group home starts
with the NDIS, other eligible residents in the home start too.
ACT NDIS transition schedule
 This tells you when different age groups get access to the
NDIS in the ACT.
 You can look at it on the Community Services website
 Or search for “ACT NDIS transition schedule”.
 The schedule lists timing of access by year of schooling, date
of birth (age) or, for group homes, by age of youngest
resident.
What people might want to know from their
workers
People who are transitioning to the NDIS may want to know:
 Whether they are eligible for the NDIS
 When they will be transitioning
 How they can develop a plan and who helps them to do this
 How their plan can be managed
 What choice and control means
 How you will work with them before, during and after they have
transitioned to the NDIS
 What your service can provide for them
 Where to go to get extra information
What does this mean for our clients and
consumers? (Discussion Points)
 Do we know when our clients and consumers are scheduled
to go onto the NDIS?
 Do we have clients and consumers who might not have
thought about their transition to the NDIS?
 How can we help our clients and consumers to understand
the NDIS transition?
 Do we think we can answer the questions our clients and
consumers might ask us?
Where can I get more information on the
transition?
 National Disability Insurance Scheme (Becoming a
Participant) Rules 2013
 NDIS Factsheet: Participating in the NDIS in the ACT
 Transition schedule on the Community Services website
