Examples
• A 3 credit hour course with ONE activity type– LEC, PRC, IND, or
SEM with 4 contact hours: 3:4:0
• A 3 credit hour course with TWO activity types - LEC and Non-Credit
LAB with 3 contact hours for the Lecture and 2 for the non-credit
lab: 3:3:2
• A 3 credit hour course with ONE activity type – LAB with 3 contact
hours: 3:0:3
• A 3 credit hour course with TWO activity types - LAB and Discussion
with 4 contact hours for the LAB and 1 contact hour for the
discussion: 3:1:4
• A Variable credit hour course with ONE activity (1-6)
Contact Hour requirements for Credit Activity
Course offering requirements by local, state, and academic governing bodies
stipulate the following for on-campus face-to-face courses:
• 1 credit hour of undergraduate instruction requires 15 hours of contact time
per term, which cannot be earned in less than one week.
• 1 credit hour of graduate instruction requires 15 hours of contact time per
term; however, will allow up to 49% of that time to be in self-directed activities
described in the syllabus and directly related to the student learning outcomes
of the course.
A college or department may provide justification and secure permission through the Graduate
Council/Academic Council for a graduate course, or Academic Council solely for an undergraduate
course for differing course offerings. The academic unit would need to demonstrate that they had
engaged in “course redesign” to achieve increased learning outcomes with less contact time.
Contact Hour Requirements for Non-Credit Activity
Non-credit sections may be attached to credit-bearing
lectures or labs when there is a clear demonstration that
the non-credit sections will contribute to student academic
success and increased performance on student learning
outcomes. Appropriate contact hours should be assigned
to the non-credit sections in relationship to the creditbearing lecture or lab, with primary instruction delivered in
the credit-bearing sections.
Example: A 3 credit-hour lecture might have a 50 minute non-credit
section.
