Northern States
● ● ● Also known as abolitionists, mostly northerners Against the use of slaves Afraid of growing black population because they would compete for jobs and businesses
Why Southerners Supported Slavery
● ● ● Southerners had large farms Grew crops such as rice, cotton, and tobacco required lots of care Believed slavery was the only way to make a profit
The President
● ● ● ● ● 1860, Lincoln elected as president Southeners feared Lincoln would end slavery 1861, south attacked north Lincoln formed the Confederate States of America Civil war began
Results of the Civil War
● ● ● Northerners won the war In January 1865, Congress proposed the Thirteenth Amendment Act made slavery illegal in USA
After the War
● ● ● Black slaves had more freedoms after the war Even with new laws, southerners still treated blacks unfairly Southern states created laws that restricted freedom of blacks
Interesting Facts
Abolitionists built underground railroads to help 20000 slaves escape to Canada Dogs were used to capture escaping slaves and bring them back.
More Facts
● ● Thomas Jefferson said “All men are created equal." but had over 200 slaves At beginning of war, blacks weren't allowed to fight for abolitionists
